IE8 Not Responding / Google Chrome Error

I've been having issues with my browsers. I'm not sure if it is just a simple error or if this may be some sort of virus or something and then I will run the scans listed in the other section.

a) I installed IE 8 but every single time after sustained periods of usage (and usually not that long, maybe every 20mins if even that) the browser stops responding, and then I have to close the browser down and relaunch. I have tried uninstalling IE 8 and then reinstalling it again but the same thing continues to happen.

b) Due to this issue, I decided to test out google chrome as it was already on my computer (and it appears to be much faster than IE). However, when I try to get into certain websites an error comes up - unable to locate component & then something along the lines of MSVCR71.dll could not be found. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled google chrome and the same thing continues to happen.

Please help. Otherwise maybe I should use another browser altogether?
