Hi,

I tried to install aprogram which went ok but when I tried to run it I got an error message:

Could not find tb85net.exe or one of its components


I looked it up on the Internet but the results were too technical for me to follow.

Can I ask which program you were trying to install and if it was a legitimate copy?

Hi,

The program is grant digital 4.0. It's a scrapbook program and it is legitimate copy.

It was bought along with a photo album in a software kit.

From the quick bit of searching I've done, it seems this problem arises when using older software that is designed for 16-bit or MS-DOS systems.

According to www.proteatextware.com.au,

Win XP SP2 will delete the autoexec file needed for 16-bit support each time it reboots. To overcome this, download the autoexec.nt file, and copy it into the folder as follows:
c:\Windows\System32\autoexec.nt

There is a more 'official' response from Microsoft (link) regarding 16-bit applications and reinstalling 'autoexec.nt'.

Hi Deon,

So if I have this right:

I have downloaded the autoexec.nt file.

Now how do I copy it into the folder c:\Windows\System32\autoexec.nt because it is all text.

Sorry to be a pain but I know very little about the actual inner workings of a computer.

Hi Rickles,

Open Notepad, then copy all the text into a document.

Click File > Save

Navigate to the folder C:\windows\system32

Save the file as "autoexec.nt" - you need to include the quotes, otherwise Notepad will tack .txt on the end.

I don't know if this will help at all Rickles but please take a look HERE.
It seems the file is associated with a program named Toolbook
Does this sound like a program you have?

I shall run through the instructions later, I am printing them out now. Odd thing yesterday, 19 11 09, was that my Antivirus had a Red Flag on the website but today it has gone and is now showing the Green Flag.

I started to follow the article and got down to step 2. See photo.
I will not go any further without you checking me, it may be a slow way of doing things but the Registry scares the cr*p out of me.

OK let's stop for just a moment then so that you make no mistakes.


ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.
The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, There are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed.


Once you have done this then go back to where you were. Highlight that entry and then Delete it. Then please go to
Start then Run
Type in msconfig and click Enter
Click on the Startup tab and see if there are any entries in there for the Toolbook program or the tb85net.exe and if so uncheck them.
Click OK or Apply and the system should reboot.
When the system restarts into windows you will get a popup warning saying System Configuration Manager
On the bottom left of that warning should be a little box that says[/b] do not start or run this utility[/b]
C;ick that box and it won't popup again.
Let me know how all these steps go.

Followed the detailed instructions:

ERUNT done and saved

Deleted TB in Registry

Msconfig done, photo enclosed as I don't thik the Toolbox is there.

Download Autoruns from the link in my signature below:
1: Extract the Autoruns Zip file contents to a folder.
2: Double-click the "Autoruns.exe".
3: Click on the "Everything" tab
4: Remove any entries that mention "File Not Found" by right-clicking the entry and select Delete.
5: Go to File then to Export As or Save in some versions.
6: Save AutoRuns.txt file to know location.
7: Attach to your next reply.
