Ram problems I think

Hi all

I'm not a computer whiz......my problem is not a big one but I have been having problems with my display....I get dots all over the monitor, it seems to follow my mouse. It started after I put in a new stick, do they have to be the same company brand name, or can they be different? If it is not a ram problem...what is it and can I fix this problem?
