What exactly IS Windows Live? Is it just another browser with email and search and all the other stuff. Is it (what was called "MSN"? Does it have applications that are essential to other parts of my computer? Is it a part of Windows operating system? Does it have any connection to the operating system? I have XP Professional (if that makes a difference). If it's just another browser, Is it better to use Windows Live with another browser or alone?

Windows Live is a suite of extra programs, namely Messenger, Writer, Mail and a handful of others. You don't "need" it as such.
