I'm not sure if I should consider this a software issue or a hardware issue. For about a week, instead of turning my computer off, I set it to hibernate. Two days ago, I finally restarted the computer (it had started to run slow) and it wouldn't boot up. A screen came up saying that it couldn't start because a file was missing or corrupted (sorry, don't remember the file name). So I restarted again and the same thing happened. I tried a few more times and finally the computer booted up. But after the computer started my keyboard didn't seem to work. I would have to push a button 10 times before it would work and now it doesn't seem to be reacting at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello MasterJ.... Welcome to GeeksToGo, :) :) :)

USB, PS2 or wireless keyboard?

Download BlueScreenView
No installation required.
Double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

Thanks to Broni for the instructions and program

When the error page was appearing, it wasn't a Blue Screen. It was just a blank black screen with the message about the corrupt or missing file.

Also, it's the keyboard on my laptop that doesn't work (right now I'm using a desktop to respond).

I've played a little more with the keyboard and the problem seems to be that it doesn't register when I push the buttons. About one in five attempts will bring a result. For example, I tried typing the letter g five times before a g appeared. It's not always five attempts. It varies. Sometimes it requires more, sometimes less.

OK thank you but nothing showing recently.
Let's try a different way.

  • Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso VEW and save it to your Desktop:
  • Double-click VEW.exe
  • Under 'Select log to query', select (as appropriate):
    • Application
    • System
  • Under 'Select type to list', select (as appropriate):
    • Error
    • Information
    • Warning
Then use the 'Date of events' or 'Number of events' as follows:

Either:
  • Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 3 in the 1 to 20 box (or any number from 1 to 20)
    Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

  • Click the radio button for 'Date of events'
In the From: boxes type today's date (presuming the crash happened today) 13 07 2009
In the To: boxes type today's date (presuming the crash happened today) 13 07 2009
    Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.
Please post the Output log in your next reply

Laptop kb issue...
Have you tried a external kb to see if the problem happens then?
Being a laptop the problem sounds like the sensors are worn out.
How old is the laptop?

Three and a half years ago, but two of those years it was left idle while i was in Italy (I just got back about 2-3 weeks ago).

I have an external mouse, so let me try using that.

Would you reccommend reinstalling the keyboard? Is that even possible with a laptop?

OK so mouse works fine not using the one with the laptop. That shows th eissue is with the keyboard and touchpad mouse.
You can try to update the drivers for the kb and mouse. What is the make and model of the laptop and I will try to locate the newest drivers for you.

Go HERE scroll down till you get to the Input Device Drivers
Find the right driver for your system and download it. Install it and let us know if it works.
If by chance you have the original drivers this would help in at least replacing a possible corrupted driver.

Okay, I went to the Input Device Drivers list, but I'm not seeing anything for my keyboard. I'm only seeing one item for keyboards and it's for a bluetooth keyboard.

Also, I had the error happen again where windows wouldn't start. This time I wrote it down:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

What's weird is that I restarted the computer and that error didn't occur again. You'd think that if the file were corrupt or missing that the computer wouldn't be able to boot up no matter how many times I tried.

If the file is corrupt but not missing the system will work but eventually it will stop booting.

If I re-install that file, will all my things get erased? Should I back it all up first?
