Hello.

I just finished a thread on the virus and malware forum. The "Geek" (specialist) was very helpful and declared my machine clean from viruses and malware. My machine does operate well.

I still can not restore my taskbar or desktop icons. These have been missing since the virus problem started. I start programs and shut down my machine down from windows task manager. He suggested posting this problem on the windows xp forum.

Good luck - Mike

Hi.

Thanks for those suggestions. Kellys corner products did not work and they got my $5.

Cybertech help had an interesting forum. My wife was able to figure that the windows explore.exe file might have been moved by the virus. The program is usually under C:\WINDOWS, but on my computer it was at C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\explore.exe. She double clicked the program from task manager and the desktop icons and taskbar reappeared. Yeah. Mike

I assume, it'd be explorer.exe?
Thanks for posting back :)

Ok. I was feeling my oats a bit too much. When I reboot, there is no taskbar or desktop icons, but when I run explorer, exe again from the aforementioned location, the taskbar and icons return. Any thoughts on making it stay there after a reboot? Mike

Did you actually copy explorer.exe to C:\Windows?

I tried to copy and paste with no avail. It seems to be one of those files that doesn't let you copy and paste. I get one of those warnings that says "you may not have authorization to access the file or the file is in use". Maybe its an ongoing punishment from the virus we eradicated. Mike

Take ownership of the file: http://www.winxptuto...m/ownership.htm
If that doesn't work, try Safe Mode.

Thanks for your suggestions guys. I was unable to change the permission/pocessions from safe mode. I also tried to copy the file from one location to the other in safe mode prompt. That was unsuccessful also. Im pretty sure if I can get the good explorer.exe copied over the bad explorer.exe, it would boot up with the taskbar and desktop icons. Any other thoughts? Mike

Yes I got one, but we need to head over to the Malware Removal forum again

Make a topic, call it something like "For Rorschach" so that nobody else answers. Then PM me with a link to it and we will get moving.
