Hi there.

I have an XP computer I'm troubleshooting that boots to a black screen with a movable cursor. Will not accept keyboard commands in Safe Mode so no task manager available. Just boots to the black screen in Safe Mode.

So far, I've tried recovery console commands: FIXBOOT and FIXMBR as well as CHKDSK /R. No success.

Any suggestions? I really don't wish to format the drive and reinstall Windows if possible.

start your system and hit F8 as you done before.
Choose : Safe Mode with command prompt >
enter : %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe >> press enter
You should now be able to run a system restore .

...hope I didn't break a rule
