pc wont shut down

sometimes when i try to shut down my pc it fails to shut down im running windows vista home premium.it goas to the logging off screen and remains there until i am forced to turn it off manually i have left it for hours to see if it would eventually shut down but it doasnt.however other times it will shut down fine please help thanks
