media players fail to launch

I am running windows 7 and every thing was working fin till just to day when my windows media player failed to start. the window opened but it froze at a blank screen. i tried to launch itunes or winamp instead and got the same problem. all my other programs launch and run normally its only my media players. i have run an AVG virus scan and it came up clean so i think the problem is some where else.
