Hello My friends,

I have a DELL desktop and three laptops, but only one of them is able to recognize the network and able to connect wireless. I have been using internet on the two laptops wired to the router. The Desktop and the two laptops are running on Windows XP while the laptop which is able to connect to Internet is running on Vista Home.

Can someone tell me what the possible reasons are for not recognizing the network. Even though the laptop and desktop are in the same room, it says No networks in range.

Thanks for your help.

would you post make and models of the laptops
also make and model of the router/modem

The vista laptop finds the wireless
would you post an ipconfig /all (see how below) from that machine here

Then also create and save an ipconfig /all from one of the none working laptops, save the log and then connect by cable to paste here

-> The firewall may be blocking
-> The wireless is not switched on - most laptops have a physical switch or uses FN + f key to toggle on/off

{ipconfig /all}
We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all

-> Start > run {search bar in Vista} > cmd > ipconfig /all
post back the results here

TWO Methods to do that - if you cannot access the internet with PC, then use method 2 to copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

Method ONE -------------------------------------------------------------
start > run {search bar in Vista} > cmd > ipconfig /all

rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Method TWO -------------------------------------------------------------

Start> Run {search bar in Vista}> CMD to open a DOS window and type:

IPCONFIG /ALL >C:\RESULT.TXT

Open C:\RESULT.TXT with Notepad and copy/paste the entire results here.

Thanks for helping me.

When I run ipconfig/all, a dos screen opens and immediately shuts off. It does not create any Result.txt file.

My three laptops are DELL Inspiron laptops - two with XP and one with Vista.

When I run ipconfig/all, a dos screen opens and immediately shuts off

you need to type
CMD
to get the dos window to open

so for XP

Start
Run
CMD

for vista
Start
in the search box

lets start with this machine
Dell Laptop Inspiron 6000

{Device Manager}
Post back the results in device manager
Start > control Panel {Vista set to classic view}> system > {Vista, device manager on left hand side} {XP hardware Tab, device manager button} > network adaptors, click on the +

post back the devices listed there
are there any ! ? or X

Also there may be a switch on the laptop which turns on the wireless
Dell use a few different methods
FN + F2 to toggle on/off

A physical switch on the machine somewhere

I'll see if i can find the details for that machine

Vista Device Manager > Network Adaptors

Broadcom 400xx10/100 integrated Controller
Intel® PRO/wireless 3945ABG Network Connection

Yes there is a switch which is FN + F2.

BTW, there is no problem with Vista. It's the other laptop that does not recognize the network.

I thought you had two machines that did not connect as posted below
Dell Laptop Inspiron 6000
Desktop DELL Dimension L800 R

So i thought we would start with looking at the Laptop Inspiron 6000 and that is what my posts relate to
1) can we see a device manager list for that machine - are there any ? X !
2) can you check the FN + F2 toggels the wireless on/off and make sure its on
3) Posted a user manual for that machine - so if necessary we can referto pages
4) A number of known issues FAQ for that machine

to confirm the Dell Laptop Inspiron 6000 is running XP and cannot connect

The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 6000 Intel Pentium Processor 1.70 GHz, 500 MB of RAM.

The Network Adapters are
1394 Net Adapter
Boradcom 440x 10/100 Integrated controller
Intel ® Pro/Wireless 2200 BG Network Connection............There are no ! or X

The connection toggle switches are FN + F2 and it does toggle between On/Off.

I dont have a user manual for the machine.
