Camera memory card

Basically I've got a slot on my laptop for my camera memory card to go into and each time I close my laptop, its wiping all the pictures off it. Also I think I should explain when I say close the laptop I do mean just closing it, not shutting it down properly. Is there some sort of setting I can change so this doesnt happen or is it unavoidable?
