Although i'm an undergrad at Geek U, i have been working on this computer of my daughter's computer for several weeks. in our network in the house, we use symantec end point protection.

when i look at the logs, it shows DWHFFE.tmp (many variations) infected, and deleted.

i have disabled the EPP, several times and followed the instructions to a tee, through step 4. upon rebooting, everything seems clean. after endpoint does a full scan, seems like i'm right back where i started.

i have attached the Mbam and cut an pasted an Avira scan results, along with an OTC log that i waited till i rebooted, and ran a scan before i ran otc.

First disable Spybot's teatimer per the instructions here:

http://forum.aumha.o...1dbb93292201b1d

teatimer does not like change and may interfere with any fixes.

Second, please do not use the attachment feature. Just copy and paste the logs into a reply.

Do you know anything about schwabcd.exe? I can't see how it starts and google doesn't know it which is usually a bad sign.

Download but do not yet run ComboFix
:!: If you have a previous version of Combofix.exe, delete it and download a fresh copy. :!:

:!: It must be saved to your desktop, do not run it :!:

:!: Disable your Antivirus software when downloading or running Combofix. If it has Script Blocking features, please disable these as well. See: http://www.bleepingc...opic114351.html

Download and Rename this file -- (call it george.exe ) to your Desktop -- from either of these two sources:
http://download.blee...Bs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

Doubleclick on george to start the program.

* :!: Important: Have no other programs running. Your Task Bar should be clear of any program entries including your Browser.

* A window may open with a series of Disclaimers. Accept the Disclaimers to start the fix. Allow it to install the Recovery Console then Continue. When the scan completes Notepad will open with with your results log open. Do a File, Exit and answer 'Yes' to save changes.

A caution - Do not run Combofix more than once. Do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed, as this may cause the process to stall or your computer to lock. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop. Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your Drive light. If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

A file will be created at => C:\Combofix.txt. I'll need to see that in your reply.

Re-activate your protection programs at this time :!:

Reboot now, please :!:

Post Back (copy/paste the .txt files, do not use attachments)
After following the above, post back with:

Contents of C:\Combofix.txt

followed all directions.

while trying to disable Tea Timer in Spybot, i kept receiving error message: "text exceed capacity". after rebooting several times, i uninstalled spybot, and rebooted.

i disabled SEProtection. i didn't notice that Avira was runing in the background. partway through the combofix process an Avira box popped up. i said ignor. and combofix completed it's process:

in reply to your question on schwabcd. this is a cd that my wife used to store some investment data. it is just put into the cd once every few months. when i ran the previous logs, i didn't know it was in the cd player. i took it out. i know that it wasn't in the cd player long, during the weeks i was trying to clean this machine.

I am just finishing my Practice Logs 1, and appreciate the clear concise instruction you gave me. thanks for your time.

Here is the log:

I would uninstall LimeWire. You never know where a file has been or what's been done to it when you get it through LimeWire.

I see WinVNC is running. Are you aware of this? This is a remote control program which I've used before but it's freeware and anyone who compromised your PC could have put it on there.

You need to pick one antivirus and get rid of the other. Running two causes problems. If you uninstall Norton run the Norton Removal program too:
http://service1.syma...005033108162039
and make sure the Windows Firewall is running afterwards.

Combofix found a couple of things it didn't like. I'm not sure that what it found was the cause of your problems tho. Next time you find one of the .tmp files could you upload it to VirusTotal.com and see if other antivirus companies recognize it as bad?

Please do Step 5 and 6 on
http://aumha.net/vie...=...p;sk=t&sd=a
and post all three logs.

The only other thing I see that looks funny is:

[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce]
"tscuninstall"="c:\windows\system32\tscupgrd.exe" [2004-08-04 44544]

It's a legitimate MS program but I'm not sure why it is RunOnce.

Thank you Ron,

followed all directions. i don't think limewire was installed (i uninstalled ia a couple of weeks ago), but i did find the exe in the Program Files director. i deleted it from there.

WinVNC was on this becuase my daughter logged onto the computer from school. Although, i'm not sure if we need to keep it on. she still logs on from school, but uses our home net through server 2003. i don't think we still need it, but i don't know who to ask.

I uninstalled avira. i was only using it to see if there were problems with endpoint protection.

the logs will follow: When i first ran otl, i did not get an extra log. i noticed that extra wasn't checked, so i checked it, and got both logs. i noticed on the extra log, the application events are the things that keep showing every day. it shows everything cleaned or quaranteed every day, but then comes again the next day. this is why i'm working on this computer. there is something that is causing these things to reappear, maybe when the computer is rebooted.

the logs:

I got it! It's a Symantec bug:

http://service1.syma...007111911135548

You do have a remnant from a possible infection:

O3 - HKCU\..\Toolbar\ShellBrowser: (no name) - {2318C2B1-4965-11D4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - No CLSID value found.

I expect if you run Hijackthis, scan only, you will find a similar line which you can check and Fix Checked (browser must be closed!).

Otherwise I think you are clean.

The Winvnc is OK as long as you know about it.

Ron,

Thank you.

i can't fine the 03 HKCU line in HijackThis list. when i rescan otl, it is there.

O2 - BHO: JQSIEStartDetectorImpl - {E7E6F031-17CE-4C07-BC86-EABFE594F69C} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\lib\deploy\jqs\ie\jqs_plugin.dll
O3 - Toolbar: Adobe PDF - {47833539-D0C5-4125-9FA8-0819E2EAAC93} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Acrobat\AcroIEFavClient.dll
O3 - Toolbar: MSN Toolbar - {1E61ED7C-7CB8-49d6-B9E9-AB4C880C8414} - C:\Program Files\MSN\Toolbar\3.0.0988.2\msneshellx.dll

is there another way to get to it?

i haven't been able to find the exact fix for the symantec. i uninstalled epp, and installed avira for today, tomorrow, i'll phone symantec to see exactly how to get the right fix.

I think it's at
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\ShellBrowser

so you can go into regedit and navigate to that key then look in the right pane for the value and then delete it. It can also be deleted with Combofix but I'm a little shaky on the correct format so you might want to try regseeker
http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm

It will let you search through the registry for 2318C2B1-4965-11D4-9B18-009027A5CD4F and then you right click on the results and delete them.

Ron,

deleted the shellbrowser with regedit.

so from what i can understand, the symantec endpoint problem wasn't really a virus. i don't completely understand, but is seems as if the windows explorer may have been opened in the temp during a SEP definition update. SEP from then on, did not trust certain files, and therefore each time there was an SEP scan, it dected the filed it didn't trust, created one or more DWHxxx files, then quaranteed and deleted the files that it had created.

Interesting, like a worker creating endless work. reminds me of an old (1920s) Korean Poem by Poet Kim So Wol (a protest poem really against the Japanese occupation). the rough translation is "every night, every nigh, all through the night, i build and break down the great wall". amazing what pops up from my Peace Corps days over 40 years ago.

Thank you for your help. i think i also learned things that will help me learn my lessons at Geek U.

Pretty bad when an antivirus detects its own files as a virus. (I expect the indexing service was looking at them and that caused them to look contaminated. Seems unlikely that Windows Explorer would be looking at the Temp folder while the scan was going on in the middle of the night.) Course I've always been of the opinion that both McAfee and Norton/Symantec were viruses. They don't seem to do that much and they slow down your PC while they do it. Prefer Avira or Avast or Kaspersky (if I'm not paying) myself.
