win 7 , , letterbox size screens on all pages ?

Hi all ,
I have just upgraded my amilo xi3650 lappy to windows 7 from vista home premium.
All went pretty flawlessly and i quite like some of the features i have come accross apart from one annoyance. Eveytime i open a webpage or application, the box is full across the screen in a letterbox shape with a 1 or 2" gap at the top and bottom showing the desktop. This is the case for default programs and features as well, such as pictures/music folders etc. My resolution is 1920 x 1080 on an 18.4" screen

I always like my pages and apps to open up in full screen , ,any ideas how to work around this one ? ?
