To start off..I got this computer from my brother because he bought a new one. One day, I wanted to burn a CD so I put a blank CD in, and it burned just fine, although it was running a little slow for a 52x speed. Anyway, the next day, I wanted to burn another CD, so I put it in the drive, attempted to burn it, and the process fails at around 8%. Just now having time, I decided to do a little research both here and on Google, and the only plausible solution I found was to update the firmware. I also read something about DMA settings, so I tried to change the DMA settings on the drive using Device Manager to whatever I could, and I also went into CMOS to change the DMA number, and once I tried to re-boot, it said it couldn't detect the drive, so I just changed it back to what it was previously. I went into Device Manager to find out that the name of my CD-RW drive is a Mitsumi CR-487ETE. I went to their website only to find that they have absolutely nothing on that model. Searched on Google some more and found a firmware upgrade so I went ahead and installed that. Restarted my computer - doesn't boot. Just hangs on the "Windows XP" screen with the scrolling bar. I made sure to make a system restore point in case something were to go wrong, so I took of my case, unplugged the CD-RW drive, and booted back up just fine. I did the system restore point, didn't work, went back to an earlier date, still didn't work. So, now...there are two hook-up's going to my CD-RW drive..one plastic piece that connects to another plastic piece which then connect to the drive, and a cable. For some reason, if those two plastic pieces are not connected, the fan for my processor does not work. Luckily, my computer will boot with those two plastic pieces connected and not the cable connected. Here's a log that I took from Nero whenever the burn process failed:

So..I guess either the drive was just dead, or rather, the burner in it was dead, or I just FUBAR'd it.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Updating firmware for a device can have bad outcomes sometimes...If the device does not have a way to reset the firmware to factory then you are out a drive.

What do you mean by "If the device does not have a way to reset the firmware to factory?"
How would one go about finding that out?

Motherboard is an Asus A7V333-X. By model, I assume you want me to tell you that it is ATX? The CD-Drive is only partially hooked up; There are two connectors, a plastic one, and an actual cable. The computer will boot if I have the plastic pin connector connected with a wire that runs from the PSU to the pin connector and not the cable connected. If I unplug the plastic pin connector, the fan for the CPU does not operate, so that is all that is connected to the drive at this moment. The computer can not read the drive at this moment in time, however, I can still open and close the drive; just won't read CD's and it is not detected by neither Everest nor My Computer.

The larger connector (picture on the right) is what is currently hooked up to a plastic piece that seems permanently connected to the drive. The other smaller connector (which i don't believe is the same one that I have hooked up to my CD-RW Drive) is also hooked up, but rather, it is coming off the bottom of the plastic piece that appears to be perm. connected to the drive. The larger connector which is able to connect to the perm. connected plastic piece runs to the PSU, whereas the smaller connector that runs off the bottom of the perm. connected piece connects to a brown connector, which then leads directly into the CPU Cooling Fan housing.

As for the picture on the left, neither of those cables are currently connected to the drive because with the EIDE cable connected to the drive, the computer will not boot; it will just hang on the Windows XP screen with the blue loading bar.

I hope I am making sense.

your going to have to get a camera and give me a picture...
try a new ide cable
and this...

whereas the smaller connector that runs off the bottom of the perm. connected piece connects to a brown connector, which then leads directly into the CPU Cooling Fan housing

is wrong...the heatsink fan has to connect to the motherboard...on a 3 pin that's labeled CPU fan
