Windows Live Messenger will not update to latest version. It will not run until it is updated. It will not uninstall from Add/Remove programs so I can start fresh. Running windowsxp sp2.

Updated: Just reading on the messenger site and I HAVE the latest version installed so why does it keep telling me to update???

Use the offline Windows Live Essentials installer, the version Microsoft want you to use which downloads everything that you need is a useless piece of garbage.
http://g.live.com/1r...wlsetup-all.exe (134Mb). This will upgrade Messenger and you can add all the other Live Stuff that you want (or not as the case may be).

that did not work; I have that file but did it again anyway. I found info to run the wlarp.exe (uninstaller) manually and get the error that I have to be signed on as administrator to uninstall. And subsequently found that info (need to be signed on to install & uninstall) at the windows live page. BUT I am signed on as administrator, there is only one user. I logged off anyway and tried it again but still get the same errors. This is the first time I have had trouble updating WLM.

Update, I logged in safe mode to get to admin user and set a password; if there was one had no clue what it was. REbooted but can't use the password. Get 2 popups: background has Administrator and password boxes grayed out and the top sez GINA Logon. The popup in front sez "unable to log u on becuz of an acct restriction."

problem solved. Used Windows Installer clean up utility (support.microsoft.com\kb\290301 and removed ALL windows live components. Then installed the full version of windows live with no problems.
