Hello,

Ok, I was trying to fix my friends computer. It has a history of randomly shutting off.

After putting sensorsview on it (Temp. gauge) and CPUcool (Temp gauge/fan control) I found out the CPU temp. was reaching 80-90 at times. I tried to do some research on that and was pointed to a program that would give me a report on the computer (It shut off on me a couple times in the process..but stayed on for awhile when I finally got it to stay on).

This is the info it turned up:

***** End of Report *****

From that I gathered that the bus speed/FSB speed, etc was all off. I researched that and found that I should go into the BIOS and try to reduce them. Well, I turned off the PC and turned it back on..the screen came up telling me to press DEL for setup and F11 for like BBOS or something? I'm almost positive it didn't say "BIOS" but I pressed F11..it then told me to select between a couple things like floppy drive, HDD, etc..I chose HDD and then it shut off.

Well, from then on whenever I'd turn it on, the computers front light above the power switch would come on, as would the fans..but nothing would come up on the screen, the normally the light on the front by the power switch flickers as the computer is working..it just says brightly lit until finally it cuts off. Well, to fix the new issue..we tried to reset the CMOS by taking out the battery..so we did. While the battery was out, my brother turned it on and it did the same thing..the light was on, but no screen or flicker in the light. After about 5min, we put the battery back in and since then have gotten absolutely NOTHING out of it. No lights, no fans, no sounds. Have already checked out the pwr_sw. I have also tried a 200W PSU put in the computer to no success.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Some more specs: 500W PSU
ECS 945P-A VER: 3.0 MOBO
1GB DDR2 RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX/9800 GTX+
Pentium D 2.80ghz CPU

Got it started up, put the other 500W psu back in it too. I got articsilver thermal paste, cleaned off the old stuff, put on the new stuff, put the heat sink back on.

It's back to the normal restarting thing. Except now I think it's doing it a lot quicker. What to do now?

Hi Steventhehro and welcome to Geeks to Go.

Those temperatures are way to hot.
When you put the artic silver on, I hope you did it properly.
That is clean off the old (super clean) and then apply a very very small amount. The idea is to just fill in the voids.

The report is showing what looks like it is being overclocked and can't handle it.

Warning 2523: Memory bus speed exceeds memory rated speed.
Reduce memory bus speed.
Warning 2542: Memory bus speed exceeds Chipset rated speed.
Reduce FSB/memory multiplier.
Warning 2518: Mainboard temperature is too high.

You need to set the speeds to default. Go into the bios. Usually del,F1,F2,esc.
Look on your screen as you boot up. It will tell which key.

Not knowing your bios I can't be specific, but there should be a spot to "load bios defaults". Save and exit and reboot.

Try that and if that does not work get us the make and model so we can try and find a manual.
