When booting XP all I get is a blue background with the mouse pointer. Most programs can be run using the Task Manager and all my files seem to be intact. I ran all the recommended anti-spyware programs but there has been no change. Here is my log:

We can definitely help you, but first you need to help us. The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.
Apply the update, reboot, and post a fresh Hijack This log.

Hi binky22

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Ewido Trojan’s and malware remover http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
This setup contains the free as well as the plus-version of the ewido security suite. After the installation, a free 14-day test version containing all the extensions of the plus-version will be activated. At the end of the test phase, the extensions of the plus version are deactivated and the freeware version can be used unlimited times. The purchased license code of the plus version can be entered at any time.
Ewido will auto-udate. Don't run yet

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Run Ewido full scan save the log.

Clear out the files in the Prefetch folder. Go to start> run> type into the box Prefetch and delete all the files in that folder.

Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure all are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items:
O2 - BHO: XMLDP Class - {60371670-81B9-4d06-9C42-4DEC1AABE62B} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: CWebDirObj Object - {C003C49F-53E4-4A72-B7D6-0B2B9997392F} - C:\WINDOWS\webdir.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [t35V3qO] ahugsnap.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PSoft1] C:\WINDOWS\System32\psoft1.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [GMedia2] C:\WINDOWS\System32\GSMedia3.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [checkrun] C:\windows\system32\elitebtn32.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [c0u9Rkiqe] admpro32.exe
O16 - DPF: {D7BF3304-138B-4DD5-86EE-491BB6A2286C} - http://toolbar.azese...l/azesearch.cab

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

If you were unable to find any of the files then please follow these additional instructions:
Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.
Run killbox and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.
C:\WINDOWS\webdir.dll
ahugsnap.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\psoft1.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\GSMedia3.exe
C:\windows\system32\elitebtn32.exe
admpro32.exe
Let the system reboot.

Please download, install and run this disk cleanup utility called Cleanup version 4.0!
http://downloads.ste...p/CleanUp40.exe
It will get rid of any malware which may be hiding in your temp folders ( a common hiding place). You will also regain a massive amount of disk space. Here is a tutorial which describes its usage:
http://www.bleepingc...tutorial93.html
Check the custom settings to your liking under options, but be sure to delete temporary files and temporary internet files for all user profiles. Also, cleanout the prefetch folder and the recycle bin. When the scan has finnished click the close button
When prompted Reboot to let it clean out the remaining files.

Please run the following free, online virus scans.
http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm
http://housecall.tre.../start_corp.asp
Please post the logs From Panda, Ewido and HJT.logWe will need them to remove previous infections that have left files on your system.

Is there a way to show all files other than using the start menu to access my computer and selecting tools? I don't have a desktop so there's no start menu and when I use the windows task manager to file > new task > browse, then click on the my computer icon there is no tools menu available to access folder options.

I hope you meant for me to double click on the file desktop.reg once it was copied to the desktop. Your instruction said to use click.reg but that didn't make sense so I used desktop.reg and granted permission to add the contents to the registry. After rebooting the problem remains the same, blue background and mouse pointer. By the way, I'm using my other computer to communicate with you as we go through the steps.

Hi binky22

http://www.atribune....oads/locate.zip
UNZIP the contents to that newly created folder
Open the Locate folder and Double click to run Locate.bat

Then post the file with a HJT.log

This will show what files are on the system

It boots to safe mode and displays a black screen with "Safe Mode" in all four corners.

Across the top of the screen is displayed:
"Microsoft ® Windows XP ® (Build 2600.xpsp2_gdr.040517-1325:Service Pack 1)"

The mouse pointer is present and moves but right or left clicking does nothing.

No change, just as last reported. Still no icons, taskbar or systray. The only difference between normal mode and safe mode is the blue background in normal vs black background in safe. Safe also has the text as previously reported. Explorer is not among the running processes if that helps.

Very strange - Went to safe mode, open task manager, ctrl+alt+delete new task, typed "explorer", windows says it can't find it. Typed explorer.exe, same result. Typed c:\windows\explorer.exe, same thing. Next browsed to windows directory, found explorer and double clicked. Again windows said "Windows cannot find c:\windows\explorer.exe"
