I was reading through the "read this before you post a highjack this log" and followed most of the steps on that post. I ran ad-aware, I tried the desktop repair and got rid of the blue screen, and as a result from that I got a black screen and no toolbar or icons. I managed to change the background picture but that was all. I ran "CleanUp" and tried to install the "ewido" thing, but it didn't work.
Whenever I start my computer and it's finished loading, I get an error message from "NT On-Access Scanner Service" and by clicking on it, that's the only way I can get online since theres a link to a website. I hope that was enough information.

Ok here we go.

The NT ACCESS SCANNER thing relates to 1 of two things. 1. You are running 2 anti-virus programs and they are interfereing with each other. 2. a corruption in McAfee. I notice that you do in fact have Norton and McAfee installed. The suggested remedy for this is to remove both anti-virus programs and re-install Norton.

As i don't know the full extent of what you have done we will run through the whole procedure.

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

*IMPORTANT*CLICK THIS LINK TO LEARN HOW TO VIEW HIDDEN FILES

* Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit. *In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
Unzip it to the desktop.

I need you to copy all of the Killbox file paths below and paste them into Notepad.

C:\wp.exe
C:\wp.bmp
C:\Windows\sites.ini
C:\Windows\popuper.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wldr.dll
C:\Windows\System32\helper.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmonp.exe
C:\Windows\System32\msmsgs.exe
C:\Windows\System32\ole32vbs.exe
C:\Windows\system32\msole32.exe

* Please run Killbox.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

* Open the Notepad file where you saved the file paths earlier and copy the file paths to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing CTRL + C:

* Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

* Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Make sure you can view hidden files.

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following if present.(please do NOT try to find them by "search" because they will not show up that way)

FOLDERS to delete (in bold) if found:

C:\Program Files\Search Maid
C:\Program Files\Virtual Maid
C:\Program Files\Security IGuard

Reboot into normal mode.

Open Notepad. Copy EVERYTHING in the box below and paste it into a new notepad file. Change the 'Save As Type' to "All Files" and save it as fix.reg on your desktop. Make sure there is NO blank line above REGEDIT4:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\Run]

"notepad2.exe"=-
"winlogon.exe"=-

"NoActiveDesktop"=-
"NoSaveSettings"=-
"ClassicShell"=-
"NoThemesTab"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop]
"NoChangingWallPaper"=-

Locate fix.reg on your desktop and doubleclick on it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry click YES. After you receive the prompt "merged successfully", follow the rest of instructions below.

1.) Download the Hoster from HERE Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

2.) Download: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf
To use: right-click and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

3.) Download, install, and run CleanUp!

Reboot your computer

4.) Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan

So that we can tackle what we have left.

Does it make a different whether it' notepad or something similar to it? I opened a plain text document on AOL and pasted it in there and saved it as "fix.reg" to the desktop, and when I tried to open it I got an error message that said "This application has failed to start because the configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem."

Hi Mandy,

Try this.

Please right-click: HERE and go to Save As (in Internet Explorer it's "Save Target As") in order to download Grinler's reg file. Save it to your desktop.

Locate "smitfraud.reg" on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the "merged successfully" prompt then follow the rest of the instructions below.

Unfortunately that didn't work either. The problem with accessing my desktop is, I have to get to it through AOL because that's basically the only program that will run. I saved it to my desktop, and since I'm on AOL, I clicked "File" and "Open" and selected desktop and double-clicked the file I wanted to open ("smitfraud") and AOL automatically says "the file is not supported by AOL" and then says "AOL will open it as a text file if you wish to continue". I clicked no, and then I went back and right-clicked on the file and clicked "merge", but it just gave me an error message saying "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is inncorrect. Re-installing the application may fix this problem" =\
