Hi,
I'm in the market for a laptop for my daughter who enters college next year. Having had experience buying my oldest daughter a laptop, I already know what we need; network card, fast processor, 512 memory, firewire port, floppy disk, Microsoft word.
Having said that, has anyone ever heard of this website?
http://www.cheapertronics.com/

I found it on amazon and it's new with no feedback yet. The prices are almost unbelievable. Matter of fact, I'm downright skeptical. Anyway, I was looking at the Apple g4 17" notebook. We have always had windows before and crashes don't even bother me (lol) However, it is scary to make the switch to the unknown. I bought my oldest daughter a dell inspirion 5100 and we still had to add a external floppy disk because she needed it for computer science class. She was also required to have Microsoft Word for computer science class (dell came with Word Perfect). I've researched the top pick laptops on several sources and I like to look at the customer satisfaction. It seems to be right up there with Apple.

My daughter will be required to do online homework through the universities network, she will want to send and receive e-mail, surf the web, and probably use aol instant messenger (her screen name is several years old). My guess is that Norton antivirus is compatible also.

If anyone has heard anything good or bad about cheapertronics, please let me know.

hey debby,

those sites that have really low prices that they seem unreal-most are, they are illegal products and definatly not trust worthy. i would recommend the dell 600m-even though i dont go with dell for some of its products, it is a really good machine, if you get it with 512, 40 gig hd. and a wireless networking card, its a really great buy, i got it for my cousin who will be a senior next year in college and ditto-one of our admins, has this laptop and also said he is happy with it, if you wanna talk more about any laptops please post back <_<

Thanks for the info. I looked this laptop up online and it looks really good. What warranty would you suggest? I bought my daughter's 5100 inspirion and consumer reports said to buy the best warranty you can afford. I guess laptops are a little more trouble prone than desktops and I bought the 3 year warranty with in-home service in case it konked out on her in school. Of course that was expensive. Is the widescreen nice on the 700 M? I think my daughter's inspirion was a 15" screen and this one is a 12" screen but maybe the widescreen makes the difference. My daughter didn't take the laptop to class, but it was nice to be able to take it home on the weekends, so I basically went with a desktop replacement. At least Dell is giving you a free printer which is more than I got before and those 3 in one units are really nice. So I typed in everything I thought she needed and it came to about $1800.00 without the $200.00 rebate.

Actually my mistake, I was looking at the 700 M instead of the 600 M you recommended. Have you taken a look at that notebook? It's basically the same price as the 600 M.

well i ordered my cousin a 4 year at home warrenty which is expensive but could be worth it, the laptop will live for atleast 6-7 years so thats good, you dont have to get that big of a warrenty because hopefully the college that your daughter goes to has an IT support that will fix her computer also

the screen is 14.1 on the 600M and it is perfect, the graphics card is fine too and its very light weight, i would recommend xp pro, 512, 40 gig, dvd-rw(or atleast cd-rw), the prosessor they recommend is fine too, other then that your good to go since it also comes with a wireless card built in which recieves excellent signal <_<

You want to buy the powerbook, the powerbook will last longer, It has features that are standard that windows suers can't even get. My powerbook came STANDARD with bluetooth 2.0, firewire 400 AND 800, A.211G wireless and will last me for years and years. In fact, It will still beat my friends windows boxes for years to come, I had an Apple iMac G3 that still has features most windows users dream of.

Apple "Mail" Is a great email client thats easy to use, has an exelent span blocker and Is better than anything windows can offer.

Appple "Safari" beats any browser that is posible to make for windows becouse for solome reason things on mac are always better. I even have an copy of internet explorer 5.5 for mac OS 9 that Is put to shame by other browsers on OS X but Is still better than IE for XP.

Apple "iChat" Is its own AIM client, altough AIM comes for mac It doesen't offer the features that iChat does, When u sign on to iChat you are Instantly able to audio chat and text message with other AIM and iChat users and to get set up for a video chat all you need to do Is drag the Firewire cable of the Camera to the computer and plug it in and ichat reconizes It, you are ready Instantly without drivers or annoying wizards. In fact mac OS X 10.4 whitch is about to come out will let you have 10 way audio conferences and 3 way video conferences with the same ease, something windows users spend hours and hundreds of dollars to do.

Norton does sell for mac and you can buy It if you wan't but I consider It to be a waste of money, "There has NEVER been a succesful virus on a Mac system, EVER."

Microsoft "word" for mac Is BETTER than word for windows and you are assured It will always be released for mac becouse microsoft Is forced by law to becouse the STOLE everything from mac but I don't recoommend It, Apple "Pages" Is a simpler word precesor and can edit, read and save as .pages .doc .pdf .html .rtf and .txt, It comes in the iwork software package along with Apple "Keynote", An apple powerpoint presentation maker that has the same ease of use as pages. Apple "Keynote" can edit, read and save as .key .ppt .mov .pdf .jpg .png .tiff and .swf, iWork Is sold on apple.com for 80$.

it is scary to make the switch to the unknown.

thanks appleswitch....for proving to me that all apple users are complete zealots and cant get over the fact that apples are "pretty" did i mention apples cost $$$$ tons of money.........

i havent had to install a single driver since i went to XP so your just plain wrong there......what else..........

Appple "Safari" beats any browser that is posible to make for windows becouse for solome reason things on mac are always better. I even have an copy of internet explorer 5.5 for mac OS 9 that Is put to shame by other browsers on OS X but Is still better than IE for XP.

safari is dumb because half the time websites dont display right........i love how you compare safari to IE.........you cant compare them......compare it to Firefox or Opera...something decent!!!

Apple "iChat" Is its own AIM client, altough AIM comes for mac It doesen't offer the features that iChat does, When u sign on to iChat you are Instantly able to audio chat and text message with other AIM and iChat users......

first of all i dont even like AIM, but if your going to use AIM i would suggest installing trillian which is better than iChat because it supports multiple im clients.............

Norton does sell for mac and you can buy It if you wan't but I consider It to be a waste of money, "There has NEVER been a succesful virus on a Mac system, EVER."

reason why there arent MAC viruses..................10% of the computer population has MACs..........if i where a hacker, and i wanted to infect as many computers as possible......would i attack the 10% or the 90%..............hmmmmmmmm...........

Apple "Mail" Is a great email client thats easy to use, has an exelent span blocker and Is better than anything windows can offer.

please explain.....can you back any of this up or do you just have alot of uneducated opinions.....

If you have any questions I would love to help you, just ad http://www.appleswitch.com/board/ to your Safari bookmarks bar and you will get fast, free support

lol..........thats a bit cocky saying add it to your safari bookmarks werent you just trying to convince her to get it oh well.......

yet again thats just plain wrong the dell laptops come with firwire.....802.11G (btw its not 800, a.211g) comes with the laptops.......oh wait they also come with integrated bluetooth.....no "only apples do"

I can sum this up by saying i have no problem with Apple......I just have a problem with Apple users thinking there better than everyone else, and what they have is better than everyone else

A business Mac user gets $24,000 more work done per year, his or her computer is down 14% less, and it costs less to support than any other platform.

P.S. that was before the Mac mini running at only 500$ and don't forget resale value, G4 Ti Powerbooks still sell for more than PCs!

i havent had to install a single driver since i went to XP so your just plain wrong there......what else..........

so you dont use printers? what about digital cameras, HDs, webcams, bluetooth mice and keyboards (that is if your windows box even has bluetoooth, apples already come standard with bluetooth 2.0). All these and more work instantly for macs

safari is dumb because half the time websites dont display right........i love how you compare safari to IE.........you cant compare them......compare it to Firefox or Opera...something decent!!!

Firefox, opera and more come for mac and I was comparing the defaust browsers, If you wan't I can compare Firefoxes, even firefox for mac Is better thsan FF for windows, and I have never come across a page that safari dident load.

first of all i dont even like AIM, but if your going to use AIM i would suggest installing trillian which is better than iChat because it supports multiple im clients.............

yes It does, AIM, Bonjour, and Jabber. And If you want more Adium supports AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo!, Rendezvous, Yahoo! Japan, Gadu-Gadu, Jabber, Napster, Lotus Sametime (via the Meanwhile plugin, and Novell GroupWise.

reason why there arent MAC viruses..................10% of the computer population has MACs..........if i where a hacker, and i wanted to infect as many computers as possible......would i attack the 10% or the 90%..............hmmmmmmmm...........

That 10% stuff for housewives, grow up, windows Is open and insecure and thats why they are so virus' ridden and diseased.

Heres a selection from an article In the Washington post:

"The usual theory has been that Windows gets all the attacks because almost everybody uses it. But millions of people do use Mac OS X and Linux, a sufficiently big market for plenty of legitimate software developers -- so why do the authors of viruses and worms rarely take aim at either system?
Even if that changed, Windows would still be an easier target. In its default setup, Windows XP on the Internet amounts to a car parked in a bad part of town, with the doors unlocked, the key in the ignition and a Post-It note on the dashboard saying, "Please don't steal this."

I just want everyone who Is scared of switching because of new things that the mac community Is a vary supportive group where most anyone will take time out of their day to help. :tazz:

yet again thats just plain wrong the dell laptops come with firwire.....802.11G (btw its not 800, a.211g) comes with the laptops.......oh wait they also come with integrated bluetooth.....no "only apples do"

I wouldent expect a windows user to know, I wasen't talkina about your primative bluetooth 1.0 and PCI firewire. I havde faster firewire than that on my G3 iMac 8 years ago! Im talking about firewire 400+800 and bluetooth 2.0! maby youll reconise those terms in 10 years when windows computers get them!

I can sum this up by saying i have no problem with Apple......I just have a problem with Apple users thinking there better than everyone else, and what they have is better than everyone else

I think Frank Petrie best answered thois questiion in his woonderfull Pro-Mac Essay as listed on Appleswitch

"6. MAC USERS ARE ARROGANT We're not arrogant. We're frustrated (and a little bit spoiled). We've spent our entire Macintosh lives defending our purchase. We've been faced with all the misconceptions listed here, the teasing, harassment, and outward media bias against Apple and the Mac for years, all the while knowing we're using the best computer on earth. Microsoft knows the Mac Operating System is the best, too! That's why Windows 95 looks and acts like it does. Believe it or not, I've actually had arguments with PC experts that try to convince me that Apple copied Windows 3.1! The reality is: we're tired of trying to make Microsoft- brainwashed PC users see the light. If that makes us come off as a bit arrogant, so be it."

You need you get YOUR facts straight before you buy into Microsoft propaganda and listen to people who have to live In a world filled with windows but have no doubt about their computer of choice.
