Physically it opens and disks spin around, but it won't actually play CD's and it does not show up on the computer.

In the device manager it shows with a yellow '!' and under properties it says;
"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"

I thought maybe reinstalling the drives would work but I can't seem to find the drives when I search online, I've tried uninstalling, and I've tried going through Microsoft support pages - the 'Fix it' tool doesn't see any problems, and if I go through Microsoft's instructions to fix it myself (these http://support.micro...spx?scid=314060 ) I cannot follow the instructions as I don't have the LowerFilters registry entry it mentioned half way through.

I have a HP G60 Notebook PC, with Windows Vista Home Basic, and it is a TSST corp CDDVDW TS-L633M ATA disc drive.

Can anyone help a damsel in distress? I'm not at all technically minded, but I need this working asap as I need to install Office to get CV's written up, I have no idea what to do to fix this.

One of these may help:
1. Uninstall the drive through Device Manager.
Restart computer. The drive will be automatically reinstalled.
or...
2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
Restart computer.
or...
3. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
Accept registry merge.
Restart computer.
or...
4. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.

Thank's to Broni for the instructions

Ahah!

I'd tried 1,2, and 4 previously with no luck.
But 3 seems to have done the trick!
Thank you, very much appreciated.

How old is the system and the optical drive itself if not original to the system?

OK it sounds like the dvd read part of the drive has failed which would mean your only option is to replace the drive. That drive seems to have a history of issues every thing from the firmware to the drive itself being faulty.

You can try the drive in another laptop to see if it will work. If not then it is the drive.
Do the dvd's themselves work in any other computer or laptop?
