My IBM 13 Gb hard drive froze and wouldn't reboot. I could access c:drive with widows rescue disk and see most files in dos except windows 98. Attempted to fix with Testdisk and changed MBR - now can't access C: drive only a: and cdrom - testdisk says it will rewrite MBR to first sector but am not sure if I should attempt this?? Drive is listed in BIOS a sauto detect but no specs. Other livecds boot and see drive but no details. System Rescue CD boots and gives full support ,keyboard,mouse usb,cd but can't read c: drive.

Have you tried the fdisk /mbr command yet ? This is only for older versions of windows, including windows 98.

Hi Bartblaze,

Was able to get windows 98 boot disk from Bootdisk.com. It contains fdisk.exe - My Microsoft floppy boot disk that came with the Windows 98 cd doesn't contain this file.

The good news is when I tried you suggestion after booting up I did get a C: prompt - however the C: prompt was generated by the Ram Drive created by the Windows 98 boot drive and did not show my hard drive data.

Did you take out the boot disk when you rebooted? It sounds like since it used the Ram drive it was looking at the floppy or the cdrom drive

Hi,

No but I have now and have booted from the hard drive and get the message "Invalid partition table". This is new - I then used a program called Hard Drive Spy that boots from the floppy drive and it finds the hard drive and sectors.
