Operating System: Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2
Computer: Intel Dual CPU E2180 @2.00GHz
896MB of RAM

Display Adapters: NVIDIA GeForce 7100 / NVIDIA nForce 630i (with updated drivers)

DirectX version 9.0c (updated with most recent Microsoft update)

BIOS: BIOSTAR group (updated)
SMBIOS Version: 2.5

My problem: When I subject the video card to high usage the computer freezes. Screen remains the same, speakers give a constant buzzing, no keyboard response, and usually the system won't respond correctly after reboot. I have updated almost everything, sprayed all my fans and made sure they are working properly and have had a power and heat monitoring program on my PC. Everything thus far has checked out.

Hello Intymax.... Welcome to GeeksToGo, :) :) :)

Please do the following:

Lets see what you have in your startup

Please click on
Start and then to Run
Type in msconfig and press Enter
Now click on Startups
Then uncheck everything and restart.
If system boots correctly and is running smoothly and faster then we have a startup problem
Try going back into msconfig and check one item and reboot
Keep doing that till you have found the problem or all are finally checked.
Post back with the results

I have only a few things on in my startup list, but I'll check the rest to see if it resolves anything. I realized recently my Auto updates was turned off, so my computer is installing about 200+ updates right now. I will report after the updates complete...

As I was writing this an error message came up that said "Windows corrupt file. The file or directory \pagefile.sys is corrupt and unreadable. Please run Chkdsk utility.

If the startup fix does not work then do the following.

Go to
Start and then to Run
Type in Chkdsk /r Note the space between k and /
Click Enter ...It will probably ask if you want to do this on the next reboot...click Y
If the window doesn't shutdown on its own then reboot the system manually. On reboot the system will start the chkdsk operation
This one will take longer then chkdsk /f

Note... there are 5 stages...
It may appear to hang at a certain percent for a hour or more or even back up and go over the same area...this is normal...
DO NOT SHUT YOUR COMPUTER DOWN WHILE CHKDSK IS RUNNING OR YOU CAN HAVE SEVERE PROBLEMS
This can take several hours to complete.
When completed it will boot the system back into windows.

Let me know if this fixes the problem

BCCode : 1000000a BCP1 : 80852201 BCP2 : 000000FF BCP3 : 00000001
BCP4 : 806E4C85 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 2_0 Product : 256_1

Windows gave me a "critical error" message including that information. Still finishing updates. I ran the chkdsk, and that problem seems to be resolved.

When I got the error message windows automatically restarted itself. The error message came up after restart.

I only see one that has to do with the video card. That would be the last one.
The next one has to do with windows itself and the last is the atapi.sys.
Do you happen to have a Genuine Microsoft XP installation disk?
You can try the next steps even if you don't but it may not work correctly. If you do then follow along. There is also the instruction if you don't have the disk.

Go Start and then to Run ("Start Search" in Vista),
Type in: sfc /scannow
Click OK (Enter in Vista).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy.
If System File Checker (sfc) finds any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD.
If sfc does not find any errors in Windows XP, it will simply quit, without any message.
In Vista you will receive the following message: "Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations".

For Vista users ONLY: Navigate to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder. You'll see CBS.log file.
Usually, it's pretty big file, so upload it to Flyupload, and post download link.

If you don't have Windows CD....
This applies mostly to Windows XP, since Vista rarely requires use of its DVD while running "sfc"
Note This method will not necessarily work as well, as when using Windows CD, because not always ALL system files are backed up on your hard drive. Also, backed up files may be corrupted as well.

Go Start and then Run
type in regedit and click OK

Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

You will see various entries Values on the right hand side.

The one we want is called: SourcePath

It probably has an entry pointing to your CD-ROM drive, usually D and that is why it is asking for the XP CD.
All we need to do is change it to: C:
Now, double click the SourcePatch setting and a new box will pop up.
Change the drive letter from your CD drive to your root drive, usually C:
Close Registry Editor.

Now restart your computer and try sfc /scannow again!

Thanks to Broni for the instructions

I did the registry edit and changed the drive D: to drive C: restarted and ran the sfc /scannow...a window popped up that has a loading bar "windows File Protection" it noted "Please wait while windows verifies that all protected windows files are intact and in their original versions" It got to under 1percent and another screen came up "Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache. Insert your Windows XP CD-ROM now." I have the options "Retry" "More Information" and "Cancel". I will stop at this point and wait for your reply.

I tried retry and more info and neither did anything so I clicked cancel. Now I'm having to click cancel to that screen a bunch of times. It says i may be asked to scan the file again later, and I have to click yes to move on.

I'm getting fed up. My laptop broke a few weeks ago and I still have the XP home edition disk for it. I'm going to just reformat this computer with that disk. I'm getting all the drivers now. =/

Thanks for all of your help though. I really appreciate it.

Make sure it is a installation disk and not a recovery disk.
Is it the same OS that is on this system?

I have professional on this system and the disk is home edition, but I've gone through the full reformatting process on my laptop many times. I think my main problem with this PC is that the person we purchased it from put a bootleg copy of windows on it, and it doesn't seem to work 100%.
