This one has now stumped me for over 2 weeks...

My pc at home now only plays sound using a media player app (itunes, winamp, win media player).

I have re-installed the drivers and still only the media players have sound.

There is no windows start up sound. There is no way to sample the windows sounds within the control panel app.

None of my web browsers have sound (Firefox, Chrome, I.E.)

I have no volume in the system tray but I can launch the sndvol32.exe to raise or lower the volume.

This all stopped working about 2-3 weeks ago and only really got time to report on it now.

Please if anyone knows the problem or solution and could help me I'd really appreciate it.

Running:
HP M9040N
Win XP SP 2
Realtek High def audio sound card

Have you install any software or hardware prior to the sound stop working?

Nothing out of the ordinary that I can think of. I tried to look at the system restore to maybe go back but there appears to not be any days to restore back to.

I should say that there has been no new hardware installed (other than external hard drives but no software with them)

I did recently switch firewall/antivirus software - but I believe that this problem was happening prior to the change. I had zonealarm and moved to comodo personal firewall / antivirus.
