Hi all,

Installed Windows 7 on about a month ago. After a couple of weeks I experienced a condition where the CPU pegged at 100% usage. Checking the Task Manager showed nothing using any undo amount of CPU except for the Task Manager itself. Checking online (from a different computer) I found several discussions about this and many reported the same exact symptoms. Some reported that drivers were the problem and due to other symptoms I was suspicious of my audio drivers. Sure enough, they updated and the problem ceased.

Last night the same symptom began again and I'm having no luck discovering what might be the source. Part of the problem is trying anything takes forever ... just rebooting takes 17 minutes! So any one test can waste an hour. If you have any ideas, please, send them on. At this point I am walking down the list in the Device Manager forcing it to check each and every driver for an update (is there an "Update ALL" option somewhere?!?).

My only real choice if I can't fix this is backup and reinstall but several of those discussions I read said that did NOT solve the problem. Guess I can go back to XP.

Anyway, any and all ideas are welcome.

HP Compaq 8510W
Intel Core2 Dou 2.4 GHz
4 GB RAM
32-bit

Download Process Explorer: http://technet.micro...s/bb896653.aspx
Unzip ProcessExplorer.zip, and double click on procexp.exe to run the program.
Click on View > Select Colunms.
In addition to already pre-selected options, make sure, the Command Line is selected, and press OK.
Go File>Save As, and save the report as Procexp.txt.
Attach the file to your next reply.

Okay, attached. I've been turning stuff off so you may notice a few things missing. Still pegged at 100% though.

It looks like mainly Norton is hogging your system (no surprise).
I suggest, you uninstall it completely, using Norton Removal Tool: http://service1.syma...005033108162039 and switch to something lighter:

- Avira free antivirus: http://www.free-av.c..._antivirus.html
- Avast! free antivirus: http://www.avast.com...avast-home.html

- free Comodo Internet Security (firewall + AV): http://www.personalf...all.comodo.com/
NOTE. During installation, Comodo will also allow you to install AV only, or firewall only, if you prefer to combine one Comodo product with some other product.

If you decide to install Avast, or Avira, make sure, Windows firewall is turned on, or use Comodo firewall..
If you decide to install Comodo Internet Security, or just Comodo firewall, make sure, Windows firewall is turned off.

IMPORTANT! Make sure, you use only ONE antivirus, and ONE firewall.
