Hello! Thanks in advance for helping me.

I've had the dreaded Trojan-spy.html.smitfraud.c on my PC. I got the same blue screen with the same warning that I've seen talked about a lot on this forum. Mine got so bad, it was to the point that I had no desktop icons, task bar, etc.

After buying SpySubtract and running that (which didn't help), I just reinstalled all of my "system recovery" disks that came with my PC. That seemed to clear everything up. But, then I started to get "warning" and "messenger service" popups that say different things. Usually something about having CRITICAL ERRORS and telling me to go to errorfixer.com or updatepatch.info. I DID NOT click on "okay" and I don't even know if those are legitimate or not. But, I just knew that I wasn't going to get my computer back to the really bad stage I had just recovered it from.

So, I came here. I ran EVERY procedure from the "Click here before posting log" link. The only thing that any of those programs found were 11 cases of "alexa data miner" found by Ad-aware. Then I installed the Windows SP1a, as advised.

Now, I'm hoping you'll take a look at my HijackThis log and let me know if I'm clean. Sorry - Just VERY paranoid now!!

Hi there and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Kat, and I'll be helping you!

Your log doesn't show the update to SP1a.

*Please go to http://www.howtotell.com (Microsoft website) using Internet Explorer.
*Click on "Windows Validation Assistant"
*Click on the "Validate Now" button.
*Be patient while the ActiveX loads, do not click on any links.
*Read the instructions on this page while it's loading. You will be prompted to install - click YES.
*Enter your product key then click "continue"
*When it says "Validation Complete" please click "Continue to return to your previous activity"
*Copy what it says and paste it here.

Kat - I've copied and pasted, below, the info from the How To Tell process you asked me to complete...

Thank you for running the Windows Validation Assistant. It appears that your Windows Product Key is valid.

This is a strong indicator that your operating system is genuine, however the Windows Validation Assistant cannot make a final determination.

The benefits of genuine Windows software include greater reliability, faster access to updates, and overall richer experiences. Users of genuine Windows are also eligible to receive special offers as part of the Windows Genuine Advantage program.

To verify that you received a genuine Certificate of Authenticity and software CD, compare your anti-piracy features in the next section.

Compare Your Anti-Piracy Features
Select the method by which you acquired Windows and compare the anti-piracy features included with your product with the anti-piracy features included with genuine Microsoft software.

Also - since it had been a while and I hadn't received a response, I DID go ahead and reload some things that had been installed on my computer before I got that nasty trojan virus. Should I repost a new HijackThis log?

Thanks again for your help!

EDITED TO ADD:

Kat - Forgot to mention that I did some online research and found out that those pop-up windows I was getting were spam thru my messenger window. Most of what I read, suggested disabling the messenger service. I have done that, but wanted to make sure that you agreed with that fix.

Hello again! Yes, disabling Messenger is a great idea! Go ahead and give me a new HJT log if you would. I may not be able to get back to you until morning. I had to take my mother to the hospital and was there most all day. I'm dead on my feet tonight. If I don't get your HJT log analyzed tonight, I will do so in the morning.

Sorry to hear that you've been dealing with some yucky hospital stuff! Hope your mom is okay. Please, take your time looking my log over and if you can't get to it, then I'll figure out something else. Computer problems certainly aren't as important as your loved ones.

Thanks again!!

ok, those are both clean. Will you try two other things for me?? I want to be SURE this is not Malware-related before I ask someone else from the browser/internet forum to step in!!

Please download CleanUp! and run it to remove any leftover remnants of infection. Click the CleanUp button, and let it scan and select any files it needs to remove. Once it is done, exit the program.

Next, run a free online scan with Panda's Active Scan

After you have done those, post me the results of the Active Scan, along with a last HJT log. If those are both clean, I'm going to move your thread to another section of the boards to get you fixed up! :tazz:

Yes! Please do go ahead and get your SP2 installed! :tazz:

Congratulations! Your log is now clean! ;)
Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and AntiSpyware Net's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.
