I HAVE A ONE INCH WIDE VERTICAL WHITE/BLANK LINE DOWN MY MONITOR SCREEN THAT WILL NOT GO AWAY!

HISTORY: I HAVE AN HP LAPTOP ZD8000 THAT IS FOUR YEARS OLD WITH EVERYTHING
ON IT THAT I PAID $2,600 FOR AND WORKED FINE UNTIL I KNOCKED A GLASS OF RED WINE ONTO THE KEYBOARD ONE NIGHT WHEN MY FIANCE AND I BROKE UP.THEN I SENT IT TO HP FIX TO FIX (ANOTHER $1,000 --OUCH!), EVERYTHING WORKED FINE...FOR ABOUT FOUR MONTHS. THEN SUDDENLY THERE APPEARS THIS ANNOYING ONE INCH WIDE WHITE/BLANK LINE DOWN THE ENTIRE MONITOR SCREEN AND IT WILL NOT GO AWAY FOR THE LAST SIX MONTHS, SO I HAVE TO MOVE ALL MY OPENED WINDOWS AROUND TO READ THE SCREEN AND TO SEE WHAT I AM WRITING. IN OTHER WORDS, IT IS LIKE SOMEONE PUT A WHITE RULER IN FRONT OF MY MONITOR AND I HAVE TO TRY TO READ AND WRITE BEHIND IT. FYI: MY DISPLAY ADAPTER IS ATI MOBILITY RADEON X600. I HAVE TRIED TO FIX IT BY UPDATING THE DRIVER VIA THE ATI WEBSITE, ETC., BUT TO NO AVAIL. I DO NOT HAVE THE FUNDS TO FIX IT OR PURCHASE ANOTHER LAPTOP FOR ANOTHER TWO MONTHS, SO I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IT IF SOMEONE OUT THERE HAS A CLUE HOW TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. I DO NOT WANT TO DO ANYTHING THAT WOULD WIPE OUT MY COMPUTER AS I HAVE PHOTOS ON IT THAT I HAVE NOT YET BACKED UP AND CANNOT REPLACE. ANY IDEAS? :)
ALSO, IF ANYONE HAS A SUGGESTION OF A RELIABLE LAPTOP THAT HAS ALL THE BELLS AND WHISTLES THAT THEY WOULD RECOMMEND FOR ME TO BUY A NEW ONE IN TWO MONTHS, PLEASE SUGGEST THAT TO ME, BECAUSE I WANT TO BUY A RELIABLE LAPTOP THAT LASTS. I AM NOT A GEEK, TECHIE, ETC. SO ANY HELP WOULD BE SO APPRECIATED. THANK YOU.

Argh, my ears! My poor ears! Please don't type in all capitals, it looks like you're shouting.

New screens are available for laptops. Updating the drivers isn't going to solve anything. If you have a separate PC monitor you can use that in the meantime.

Like Neil said, the best solution for now is to use a different monitor if you don't have the funds for a repair or new computer. It's a hardware problem, not a driver problem.
