hi there ... this is an unusal problem at best....i have a sony viao PCG-XG500 model... with WIN ME installed. Recently the usb port and the IS400 port which is the 1394 cable link connect both stopped responding. As per the system properties menu.. it shows under the PCI BUS category that the " Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller is not working properly because the ACPI IRQ holder for PCI IRQ Steering is not working properly(Code 31)

Further more when you click the properties button, it shows under the
" ACPI IRQ holder for PCI IRQ Steering " properties window... under the Device status title the following message: Windows stopped responding while attempting to start this device and therefore will never attempt to start this device again.(Code 11).

I have tried reinstalling a fresh copy of Win ME, and also had restored the hard disk from the restore disk provided by Sony... both didn't help fix the problem.... Hoping some one here can help me out. What can I do.... is this a hardware fault.... can it be fixed or do i have to take to a sony service centre...(God know where that is)

it certainly sounds like a hardware problem If you can drop into BIOS/setup, can you disable, then re-enable thse devices ? (look for somehting like integrated peripherals)
