Hi, all... :tazz:

My friend has an older HP Pavillion XE742 Desktop running a 667MHz Celeron and Windows ME. Everything was (and is) basic out of the box.
Here's the URL: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?cc=us&docname=bph06213&lc=en

I'd like to give it a little bit of a RAM upgrade, since it's so slowwwww.
-Any info on "semi-inexpensive" RAM at Maximum speed for this thing? ;)
-
I've installed AVG Free, Ad-Aware Free, and SpyBot S&D on it, and try to keep everything updated. She doesn't live too close to me, so I just want some suggestions on how it can be "Bumped-up" a little.
-She's got Napster & Limewire on it.
She's online via Cable modem, too.

Thanks to anyone out there!

http://www.newegg.co...N82E16820133012

your system came with pc100, but pc133 will work in it (at reduced speed)...pc133 is actually less expensive than pc100 ram, these days

The other big (well, another big) problem with this system is the integrated video card.

You could get a cheap pci videocard and upgrade with that....see if you can disable the onboard to get the the 11mb ram back that it is taking

;) Hi, gerryf...
Sorry for the late reply back.
Just wanted to say Thanks for the Memory advice on the HP pc.
Hmmm...so basically, It can't get much faster than it already has, huh?
Doggone, HP :tazz:
Listen, according to the Specs, its supposed to have 2 slots for 168-pin DIMMs right?... Well, doesn't it say it has a Maximum Capacity of 512 MB (2 X 256 MB DIMM) ???-
Please, Could you do me a favor and look over the Specs section under Memory (Maximum), and see if it is possible to install 2 256MB DIMMS,; maybe I'm mistaken, though. ;)
-
Thank You in advance, gerryf.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Oh, and as far as the Integrated VidCard goes, if I can just get away with some RAM upgrade, I don't want to mess with anything else.
-
I'm a simple "Plug-N-Pray" type of guy. :tazz:
-
Thanks for the further info though.

You certainly can do that. And you can keep the card...just don't expect miracles.

Cool, I appreciate your info, Gerryf.

I went to NewEgg and found some 256MB which I believe should work for it. Am I correct? Is it a good price?

;) Alriiiiight! Thanks so MUCH for your help, Gerryf! :tazz:
It has been literally Invaluable!
-
I've also made a "mental note" that you'd advised me not to expect any miracles on the upgrade w/o a change of VidCard.
(So I'll not get my hopes up too high, okay?) ;)
-
Truly, my friend mostly uses her HP Pavilion for simple "Surfin', Mailin', and the like; I just wanted to give it a slight "bump", ya know? :)
-
So for all intents & purposes, you can close this one.
-
One last thing, may I add you to my "contact list" , so long as I abide by the rules of no PMing for help?
-
I'll definitely Post Publicly should I need further assistance.
-
ttul,
Tony :)
