Black Screen

The computer turns on however it will not boot, it simply shows a black screen with no cursor. The dvd rom is active as if trying to read something from the drive. Cannot get it to boot from the dvd drive to try to reinstall OS. Using f keys to try to change boot order does not work (screen just comes up black. All indicator lites on the machine are on and blink off and on every two minutes or so.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
