I have a serious problem with XP.

First I thought it was just when I tried to play a video file - Media Player crashes instantly and locks up the computer.

Now when I try and even open a folder to play music, which was working before, XP does the same thing.

I get a message saying Windows has encountered an error and needs to close and then Dr Watson PostMortem Debugger has encountered an error and needs to close.

Then the computer freezes entirely and I have to force a reboot.

The computer is working fine while I'm using internet however, and I can stream audio and video with no problem.

I have no idea what the problem is and what I can do to fix it.

Any help is appreciated.

Go Start>Run ("Start Search" in Vista), type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK (hold CTRL, and SHIFT, hit Enter in Vista).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy (with Vista, most likely, you won't need it).
If System File Checker (sfc) will find any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD (rarely in Vista case).

Ok - tried that.

Nothing happened. Seems okay, apparently.

I can now play music without Media Player crashing, but still cannot play videos.

Yes.

Music plays on media player fine.

Video causes Media player and Windows to crash instantly. Also tried Media Player Classic and that doesn't work either.

Okay - well I tried a video with the other player and it seemed to work.

I'm still having a problem with folders crashing - just right clicked on something to open it with VLC player and the folder crashed and Windows crashed. But it didn't lock up this time.

Well, regarding WMP, it looks like you have some codecs missing.
Get K-Lite Codec Pack: http://www.filehippo...ite_codec_pack/
Install it, restart computer and try WMP again.

Well
I right clicked on a file, started it through VLC and the computer crashed.
Had to reboot.

Then I started the file after starting VLC player first and that has worked.

But it still doesn't explain what is causing the crashes.
