I have been asked to help out a friend who has managed to get his PC completely compromised by a miriad of spyware and malware.

I have already run Ad Aware and SPyBot and both have removed quite a lot of nasties. Norton Antivirus has been run several times, although it has not been able to remove everyhting it has found.

Things are still not right though. The main problem seems to be random popups when browsing the internet - he's using a dialup connection so these dial home infections completely saturate his connection and it eventually drops out. All in all, very frustrating. It's WIn XP Home by the way.

Here is the HiJackThis log. I already have a few ideas of the culprits, but would like a more informed opinion. Thank you in advance for any help.

Thanks for your reply. I realize the PC needs updating, however, i'm unwilling to update to SP2 until the malware is removed. This also contradicts your own advice in the pinned post at the top of this forum.

I will try and run some of these other tools.

Hi jhurrell

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Ewido Trojan’s and malware remover http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
This setup contains the free as well as the plus-version of the ewido security suite. After the installation, a free 14-day test version containing all the extensions of the plus-version will be activated. At the end of the test phase, the extensions of the plus version are deactivated and the freeware version can be used unlimited times. The purchased license code of the plus version can be entered at any time.
Ewido will auto-udate. don't run it yet

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Clear out the files in the Prefetch folder. Go to start> run> type into the box Prefetch and delete all the files in that folder.

Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure all are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Run ewido full scan save the log

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items:

Hi jhurrell

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Important Step
1. Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the service called:

System Startup Service (SvcProc)
When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. If you don´t find this service listed go ahead with the next steps.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [evzpwg] c:\windows\system32\torenit.exe
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://awbeta.net-nucleus.com (HKLM)
O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner -C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:
C:\eied_s7.cab<--Delete the whole folder
Exit Explorer.

Run killbox and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.
C:\WINDOWS\System32\apuc.dll
c:\windows\system32\torenit.exe
C:\eied_s7.cab

C:\WINDOWS\inf\alchem.inf
C:\WINDOWS\inf\btgrab.inf
C:\WINDOWS\inf\twaintec.inf
C:\WINDOWS\system32\apuc.dll

C:\WINDOWS\twaintec.ini
Let the system reboot.

Please download, install and run this disk cleanup utility called Cleanup version 4.0!
http://downloads.ste...p/CleanUp40.exe
It will get rid of any malware which may be hiding in your temp folders ( a common hiding place). You will also regain a massive amount of disk space. Here is a tutorial which describes its usage:
http://www.bleepingc...tutorial93.html
Check the custom settings to your liking under options, but be sure to delete temporary files and temporary internet files for all user profiles. Also, cleanout the prefetch folder and the recycle bin.
Reboot when prompted to let it clean out the remaining files.

Please run the following free, online virus scans.
http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm
http://housecall.tre.../start_corp.asp
Please post the logs From Panda virus scan and HJT.logWe will need them to remove previous infections that have left files on your system.

Hi jhurrell

How to Remove NCase? if found in the registry

1) Because several files may be in use currently when NCase has infected your system, you should first start Windows in Safe Mode, generally by pressing F8 when the computer restarts and choosing Safe Mode for the list of choices.

2) Remove the Startup Entry in the Registry

* Click on Start, Run, Type REGEDIT and Click OK
* Click the pluses(+) next to the following items
o HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
o Software
o Microsoft
o Windows
o CurrentVersion
o Run
* Right-Click on the file MSBB and click DELETE
* Check for any randomly named entries pointing to an EXE file of the same name in the Windows directory
(this can be part of the NCASE infection as well)
* Click the pluses(+) next to the following items
o HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
o Software
o Microsoft
o Windows
o CurrentVersion
o Uninstall
* Right-click and Delete the following folders
o nCase
o msbb
* Click the pluses(+) next to the following items
o HKEY_Current_User
o Software
* Right-click and Delete the folder called 180solutions

3) Delete the NCASE folder and/or the MSBB.exe file

* Open My Computer, Drive C, Program Files
* Right-click on the NCASE folder (if it exists) and Delete it, you may also find a 180Solutions folder, delete this as well.
* Look for and Delete MSBB.EXE in the System or System32 directory under Windows

4) Remove the Active X Control (if present)

* Open My Computer, Drive C, Windows, Downloaded Program Files folder
* Right-click on the nCaseInstaller Class entry (if present) and click Delete
* Close back out to the Desktop

Run killbox and delete the following file,s
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.1\MirarSetup.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\MirarSetup.exe

Reboot the computer in Normal Mode and test (ncase should be gone)

Please run the following free, online virus scans.
http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm
Please post the logs From Panda virus scan and HJT.log we will need them to remove previous infections that have left files on your system.

Thanks again! NCase has gone - was able to remove some of the items specified - some didn't exist. Panda now indicates a new Adware - BlazeFind.. I've tried to remove this with a Symantec tool, but it can't find it on the system. I've also tried other instructions for removing BlazeFInd, but none seem to work (or more precisely Ican't find the files or registry entries it tells me to delete.

Trend House call finds nothing.

Anyway, here are the two most current logs:

Thanks Kc... unfortunately, I can't find any of these items... none in the registry, and no DLLs... very odd. I'm currently doing another Panda Scan.

Any other ideas..? After searching on google, other websites are saying to search for the same items...

Thanks again Kc...

This little tool did manage to find one item in the registry and removed it no prob. A subsequent run after rebooting came up clear.

However, Panda is still indicating this stubborn little beast is still hanging around... Same log as in my above posts:

Adware:Adware/BlazeFind No disinfected Windows Registry

What a subborn little brute. Is it worth trying to get rid of this..?? It doesn't seem to be affecting performance at all now - in fact eveything saeems to be running very smoothly. I don't want to keep annoying you with the same thing...

Hi jhurrell

It not a problem as with all software there is allways some left over's.
Without the dll's , ini files there is no danger from the malware.
I will continue to look for more reistery items when I do more HJT.logs
I will PM you if and only if I find any the panda scan is still a beta but it is very good and can only improve in time.

Congratulations! Your system is CLEAN ;)

Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place

How do you prevent spyware from being installed again? We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use). Click Here
QUOTE
Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.

It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
1. Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend FireFox.
http://www.mozilla.o...oducts/firefox/
2. Install Sun's Java. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine .
You can download Sun's newer JVM for Windows at http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html.

After doing all these, your system will be thoroughly protected from future threats.

Have a nice Day.

Agreed with regard to lack of ini + dll files.

Thanks for your help and time, very much appreciated. I would have re-installed it myself, but this friend wanted to avoid that at all costs, so your help is invaluable.
