Hello geeks,
I am not particularly tech savvy, so I will start with the problem, then a general story of my case (probably have extra details, but I do not know what might be important) and then just tell me anything you need in order to help me out.

In Device Manager -> Other Devices I have 3 items with the yellow unknown question mark:
PCI Device
System Interrupt Controller
Unknown Device
I cannot "Update Driver..." as it tells me "The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software."

For the story, I really don't know if anything would be important but:
I bought a roughly 3 year old XP PC my coworker bought in Korea. It was home made by a Korean, and was poorly maintained; lacking even up to date spy-ware when I bought it and having a warning for worm.win32.skynet on it. I did not check if there were unknown devices in the Device Manager.

I took an XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 recovery CD made for a laptop I used to own (it was stolen recently) and reformatted the PC. It took two tries, the first time did not remove the old files (placed them in a folder), but the second time did and I think I have a clean install. I also updated it at update.microsoft.com.
Several items in the Device Manager had the unknown yellow question mark, but only the three listed weren't solved by allowing the drivers to update over the internet.

Some googling gave me the belief I am simply lacking driver, but I do not know how I would get them since the magic "Update drivers..." button isn't enough. So I am asking for any assistance you can give me.

Surely, your all problems came from using recovery CD from another computer on this computer.

Your first best shot, would be to install chipset driver.
What actually doesn't work?

Download, and install Everest Ultimate Edition 4.6: http://www.lavalys.c...ultimate460.exe
Enter following registration code (Help>Enter product key) to make it fully functional:
RHGJE-54X47-HML9C-V498I-UUMVI
(it's all legal, the above version has been recently offered as a free download)

In left pane expand Computer folder.
Click once on Summary
In upper menu, go Report>Quick Report-Summary
Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post.
Don't include anything under the line Debug - PCI

Realized using the laptop recovery CD might cause problems, but it is all I have atm and hoping it got rid of the worm plus trojans, spyware, anything else that was on the PC.

"Your first best shot, would be to install chipset driver.

I don't know; everything I know of works. I noticed these three when fixing the other ones which had a more noticeable effect and figure something must run better if they get added. Also chipset driver is just the full name for driver?

Try to download and install chipset driver, first: http://www.nodevice....0/get37354.html
Be little bit careful there. After entering download code and clicking on "Download" button, you'll get redirected to download page. There is a 30 sec counter running there and next to it you'll see some other "Download" button. DO NOT click on it. It'll give you some driver scanner. Wait for the counter to finish and then you'll see YOUR "Download" button.

At the same time, you can investigate those three unknown drivers in Device Manager, following this guide:

1. Open Device Manager (Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager)
2. The hardware whose drivers are missing will appear as Unknown device, so it's easier to locate the device.
3. Right click on the unknown device and click on Properties.
4. Under the Properties window click on Details tab and select Device Instance Id (or Device Instance Path) from the drop down box.
5. You should see a code similar to this

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27DC&SUBSYS_30868086
&REV_01\4&1E46F438&0&40F0

6. The portion of the code highlighted in RED is the Vendor ID and the portion highlighted in GREEN is the Device ID. In this example:

Vendor ID = 8086
Device ID = 27DC

7. Once you have obtained both the IDs, proceed to PCI Database. There you can either search for the vendor from the vendor ID or directly get information about the device along with the vendor name by searching with the device ID.

8. Then from there you can go directly to the hardware manufactureres website and get the driver.

This will be my last post before I go to sleep. I will check back when I wake up, which probably won't be until noonish eastern time. Thank you for your help so far.

Downloaded the file: via_hyperionpro_v510a.zip
It came with both "driverupdater_multilang" and "via_hyperionpro_v510a"
The first one I installed and it gave me Carambis's Driver Updater, which I ran, it showed me a whole bunch of things I needed to Download, and then told me I had to register to download them at the price of $27. I'm assuming you weren't expecting me to do so.
From the actual via_hyperionpro_v510a I ran the SETUP and it extracted a bunch of files into a folder and told me to restart my computer, which I did. Now I don't know what I am suppose to do with them.

While doing that I did check the IDs and only the PCI Device gave me anything:
0x6121 61xx RAID 0x11AB Marvell Semiconductor
Googled Marvell's official site and it did have a driver search. Using "Network Controller" (only option) and "Windows XP x86 (32 bit)" I downloaded and ran setup for the "W2000/WXP/2003/Vista/Win x86 and x64 Multi-Language Installer (32- and 64-bit) for Yukon Devices" link. But whatever it did, it didn't fix my yellow unknown PCI Device from Other Devices. Also tried "Update Drivers..." again, but no change.

The System Interrupt Controller ID gave me an 1106 (VIA Technologies, Inc) for the Vendor ID, but no matches for the 5351 Device ID. However after the restart from installing those two programs earlier I see its no longer on my Other Devices list, so one of them must have fixed it.

Lastly the Unknown Device's Device Instance Id is just: ACPI\ATK0110\1010110
Quite different from the others and your example, googling did lead me to think its my ASUS motherboard, I tried their website and it led me to what seemed to be the same as the via_hyperionpro_v510a.zip, with the same results; its still a yellow question mark.

Try this driver: http://www.driversto...0281/index.html (3rd from the top, chipset driver).

I suspect, the first driver (PCI Device) may be simply dial-up modem driver. If so, it wouldn't be a big deal, if it's missing.

Well, since those missing drivers are not causing any visible problems, I'd simply leave them alone.
