how to reinstal win XP without CD drive

hi, i have a compaq mini laptop and i had viruses which destroyed my OS. i would like to reinstall XP, i have a cd but the laptop has no cd drive, it has USB. can I copy the cd to my external HDD and connect thru USB to the laptop? would that work? any way of fixing the current OS? i can not log in safe mode or last good know its just black screen! thank YOU!
