Hi. I am new to this forum. Earlier today, I started getting the Google Installer error on startup. After going ahead and clicking "report error" a few times, nad having my PC freeze up when running firefox or IE7, I realized that this was something that wasn't going away. After searching (using my other PC), I've seen other entries for it on this forum, but it appears each fix is a bit different, and so I am posting to see if one of you can help me. I'm not a complete novice on the PC, but this level of malware scanning / detection is beyond my skills.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Thanks for your reply. I have tried to run malwarebytes, but was unable to do so (it installed, but would not run). I will try to run TFC, and then prepare my computer using SysRestore.

I was able to install (although not update) and run an mbam (after renaming it to mbam.com) quick scan. It detected 14 items (see uploaded logfile). I rebooted, but the google installer error message still appears immediately after startup. I re-ran MBAM quick scan and it found no infections. I have tried to run the full scan a couple times, but the machine has frozen at about 15min into the scan both times.

I was not able to create a system restore point (either using sysrestore or the built-in Thinkpad tools). However, I was able to create a registry backup using ERUNT.

Thanks in advance.

Based on seeing your previous suggestions when you helped neataznguy with this problem on 12/13, I went ahead and ran OTL pasting in the custom script you recommended then. I've pasted the results below.

Three other things I should mention
(1) Earlier, I ran TFC and cleaned out all the temp files.
(2) I am posting using a separate laptop from the one that's infected, and am transferring files via USB flash drive.
(3) The infected computer often has a 500 GB WD Passport drive hooked up to it. The external HD primiarly contains media files and some backups, but is not my primary external backup drive. I wanted to let you know in case it also should be scanned for infections.

Thanks.

hi

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :OTL
    O33 - MountPoints2\{32b86913-19ab-11dd-a43a-001302ad452d}\Shell\AutoRun\command - "" = E:\wd_windows_tools\WDEULA.exe -- File not found

    :Files

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

Download the GMER Rootkit Scanner. Unzip it to your Desktop.

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any
"<--- ROOKIT" entries unless advised by a trained Security Analyst

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.
  • Click NO
  • In the right panel, you will see a bunch of boxes that have been checked ... leave everything checked and ensure the Show all box is Unchecked.
  • Now click the Scan button.
Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
  • Click OK.
  • GMER will produce a log. Click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "GMER.txt"
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
Post the contents of GMER.txt in your next reply.

I'm still in the process of running GMER. I made a couple attempts yesterday and again last night, but the PC froze up before it was finished.

This morning, I deleted a batch of ~11,000 files I don't need (.mxm files that are related to a music program I use called mixmeister) that were adding ~6 hours to the GMER scan. I then re-ran your OTL fix, and have now just started to re-run GMER. Hopefully, it will complete in 3-4 hours this time, rather than 8-10. I will post the results later today (or if it continues to not run, will post an update and progress).

Thanks,

-Karl

After running most of the day, the GMER scan crashed at some point late in the process (it had gotten at least up to the c:\program files\itunes directory, but then re-booted itself 15-20 min later. Once it re-booted, a popup came up saying that windows had recovered from a serious error.

From looking at the logfile earlier in the process, I saw only 3 red lines, all of which came up before it started ascanning the files. I re-ran GMER, de-selecting "Files." The log from that scan is pasted below.

Thanks,

-Karl

hi

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.
  • Right click on the Avenger.zip folder and select "Extract All..."
  • Follow the prompts and extract the avenger folder to your desktop
2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Begin copying here:

Drivers to delete:
H8SRTd
Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\H8SRTxkikdrftqm.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\H8SRTnijfriofuc.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\H8SRTfifnbsmrfv.dat
C:\WINDOWS\system32\H8SRTosqcikeila.dll

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, open the avenger folder and start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon.
  • Right click on the window under Input script here:, and select Paste.
  • You can also click on this window and press (Ctrl+V) to paste the contents of the clipboard.
  • Click on Execute
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
  • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Delete", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply

I ran as you instructed. On the final reboot, the PC booted up with no "google installer" error. I have rebooted one more time, and the same thing happened, so it seems to be fixed.

A couple final questions. Any thoughts on how the pc got infected with H8SRT (assuming that was the actual malware)? This is our home machine - we use it for email, internet, music and photos. Norton AV is installed and set to run weekly (I guess it missed it). We don't use any IM services and (generally) do not open attachments without downloading and scanning first. How can I make sure I don't get it again? Should I swap out Norton for another AV program; set MBAM to run regularly; another solution?

Thanks again for your help.

hard to say how you got it

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you don't know how to disable them then just continue on.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt log in your next reply.
