Hi all!

My Dell Inspiron 6400 (Windows XP) is driving me mad with a CD/DVD-ROM problem. I've got a SONY DVD+-RW D-WQ58A which only reads DVDs, not CDs and not CD-ROMs!!!! Ahhhh (frustration)!!!

I've tried to download a driver update on the Dell site but when I open it I get an error: Target NEC ND-6650A is not found correctly.

I've been searching forums with people with the same problem, and I followed some advice to delete the upper and lower filters in the registry. Still not working.

I also saw on a forum that the Sony disc drive doesn't require any drivers, and that it must be a broken CD laser, but this seems odd becuase it reads DVDs.

I love the GeeksToGo online community and hope that someone will be able to help.

Thanks everyone!

Optical drives don't need any extra drivers.

Most likely, CD read laser is gone and you need new drive.

You're welcome :)
If you want a clear shot, you can try that drive in another computer, but with todays optical drive prices, I'd be too lazy to do it.
