Sounds right to me, generally as long as you are going to an input on the TV, and it's on the correct input while on, it should give you something. The only thing you may need to access and change is the resolution to make it compatible with the TV and/or going into display properties on the laptop, and changing the primary monitor (if you would like to use the TV as your sole display device while connected, or mirror your display, or have dual displays).
The only other thing you may want to consider is whether or not your HDMI cable is good, I have not seen them go bad terribly often, but it has happened on occasion. Try it on a PS3, or 360 if you have one, just to double check.
