Just got all of my new parts in for a build I was doing with a conglomerate of spare things I had laying around and my specs list is:

motherboard - Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6
cpu - Intel Core 2 duo @ 2.8GHz
memory - 2gb of crucial.com Ballistix (2 1gb sticks)
PSU - 550W modular PSU, antec
Video Card - PNY Nvidia GeForce 8500GT (Also I've tried restarting the computer with a XFX geforce 9400) both 512MB.

I have no IDE peripherals or anything else plugged in except for one molex pin powering the fans in my computer.

I start the computer to look at the POST test, and all the fans start up, CPU fan included, except the CPU fan only spins for one second, and then waits another 2 seconds, and then starts back up again.

The computer runs for about ten seconds, and i get no visual output from the video card. I've tried switching the place of the video card (Mobo has 2 PCI express slots) I've tried reseating the RAM and the video card. I don't know what else to do.

any Ideas? any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Did you bench test the motherboard before installing it?
Is the motherboard, cpu, memory, video card all new parts?
It sounds like a short between motherboard and case.
Try this:

Disconnect everything from the Motherboard except

• keyboard
• mouse
• video output
• 20+4 powercable
• 4/8 pin 12v wire both coming from the powersupply,
• Cpu fan wire
• power and reset button to the case
• case speaker

Now you should have NOTHING connected to the motherboard except what was listed above.

The goal here is just to test the mobo:

If the computer still will not boot up the please remove the motherboard from the computer along with the power supply

place the motherboard on a piece of card board larger than the motherboard,

this will eliminate a short from the mobo to the case which could be a possibility
Install the cpu with, 1 stick ram in dimm 1, power supply, case switch and case speaker
Connect ps2 mouse and keyboard along with the monitor
Repeat the above and power on
If the computer now boots into bios you most likely had a case short so make sure when installing the motherboard in the case that you use standoffs,
and they line up with the mounting holes in the motherboard and none of the standoffs touch anything else on the underside of the board.

I just tried exactly what you said on both cases, and neither of them worked. any more suggestions?

If the system does not post with the mobo outside of the case then you have to look at the
PSU, MOBO or CPU as being the culprit.
What parts are new and what parts are used?

Did you connect all of the power connectors as per the manual.

I know this is an old thread, but my problem is very similar, so I thought it might be best to post here.

I've had this system for a few years and recently had to post the components to a new home for reassembly. Everything was packed well and seemed to arrive with no damage.

Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6
EVGA 8800GT
4x 1GB OCZ Ram (two in at the moment)
Seasonic S12 - 430W PSU
Thermaltake Elite case

I didn't have time to take photos or write down how I had connected everything before I sent the machine (yeah, I know that was crazy) so maybe I'm putting it together wrong, although I've tried a few different combinations.

I've tried the 4pin AT 12v connector and now am trying the 8pin EPS 12v connector. I'm not sure whether I should have the extra 4 pins connected alongside the standard ATX connector.

Basically, when I flip the switch the fans spin for a couple of seconds and then stop. I've tried taking the board out of the case and putting it on card, but no luck.

I've taken a few photos to illustrate how it is at the moment. I have the manuals but it's been a while since I last built the machine.

I'm hoping that, because some power is getting to the whole system (even the graphics card), that the PSU and MB are OK. I've tried it without anything connected (RAM, graphics card, etc.) but the with same result.

Really need to get the machine back up and running for work. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks!

hi there...maybe your mobo is grounded...or try another power supply...or disconnect the cables carefully and plug it again carefully on its proper placement....then try try turning it on...hope this hepls...tanx
