Hi. I"m running Windows XP. When I put in a game, it starts to read the disc. When I press launch game, it says "cannot locate the dvd-rom, press ok and restart" I do that, but nothing happens. :) Any ideas as to what could be the problem?

Does game work in another computer?
If it does then I would say your dvd drive is failing.

I"m not sure if my dvd rom is not working. If i put in a game that says "CD-rom" in front of the cover, it will play it, or a music cd. For some reason, it will not play the games that say "dvd-rom. So basically, it will play anything else that isn't dvd based...

Are you sure that the reader is a CD and a DVD reader?

It sounds like you have a cdrom and not dvd\cdrom.

I"m %100 sure it's a dvd/cd rom. I forgot to mention that this dvd rom was working in my old computer. I built a new computer and transfered it over. Ever since it's been giving me problems... I'm pretty sure I connected the dvd rom correctly becuase it did work a few times in my new one, but most of the time it would not work when I put in a dvd. It does work with a cd though.

At this point then it would seem the dvd side of the drive has failed.
Have you tried a different drive or tried the drive in a different system?

Sorry it took so long to respond. I forgot my pass and username and took a while to figure it out. I got some new info.

It also says, "please insert the correct DVD-rom and select ok". I looked at the game short cut, and it says "shortcut to CD drive". I'm pretty sure it's not suppose to say that, becuase the game is a DVD. Is there a way I can change it without having to uninstall it and install it again?

What about trying a movie dvd?
Where did the game dvd come from?
Check in My Computer and what does it identify the drive as? Cd\DVD or DVD or Cdrom

It says DVD-Ram Drive. I looked it up from the manufacturere, and it's a dvd/cd drive. The DVD drive is not broken. It can play CDs, DVD movies, and even games. I'm just having trouble with this one. I think it's set to play in the CD drive instead of the DVD. How do I check that?

It's one drive correct?
Cd\Dvd correct?

I'm just having trouble with this one

I"m not sure if my dvd rom is not working. If i put in a game that says "CD-rom" in front of the cover

This is telling me this drive is not dvd capable.

I uninstalled the game and installed it again and I'm still getting the same problem. The DVD drive works because it plays some of my other DVD based games. I think it's the game. I"m gonna take it to a friend's house to see if it works there. If it doesn't, the games broke...
