Try this and see what happens. Disconnect the cd\dvd drive and then boot the system back up. Is the system faster now? If so you may have a failing optical drive.

Go to
Start and then to Run
Type in Chkdsk /r Note the space between k and /
Click Enter ...It will probably ask if you want to do this on the next reboot...click Y
If the window doesn't shutdown on its own then reboot the system manually. On reboot the system will start the chkdsk operation
This one will take longer then chkdsk /f

Note... there are 5 stages...
It may appear to hang at a certain percent for a hour or more or even back up and go over the same area...this is normal...
DO NOT SHUT YOUR COMPUTER DOWN WHILE CHKDSK IS RUNNING OR YOU CAN HAVE SEVERE PROBLEMS
This can take several hours to complete.
When completed it will boot the system back into windows.

Let me know if this fixes the problem

Ok, we need to break this down.

What is slow?
Is it specific to starting up?
Is the slowness in opening programs?
Is the slowness in using a specific browser?
Is it slow in using windows explorer?

Even though an earlier post showed 1gb of ram, can you check that out.
Go to start....
go to run...
type in sysdm.cpl and ok.

Can you get us a screen shot please.

Can you share with us how it finally started running fine?
What steps finally worked for you?
This will help someone later who may have the same issue.
I'm glad it all worked out for you in the end and thank you for letting us assist you.
