Hi guys,

I am new to building pc's

The parts i am considering are:

cpu?????
mobo - asus A8n Sli socket 939
Ram - Kingston 1024mb DDr pc3200
Gfx card - ati radeon X800XL
Sound card - creative audigy 7.1 blaster
HDD - Seas gate 120 Gb 7200rpm
500W psu w/ dual fan

I would also liek to know how i should go about cooling it down. I don't know nwhat cpu fan to get??

Can anyone recommend what cpu to get? I wanted a AMD but i am stuck please help

it looks like you have a great start. im running an asus a8n sli deluxe and its awesome. i dont think u need a sound card on it though since it has onboard 8 channel audio.

i have anamd athalon 64 3500+ if u get it from the link then it comes with a fan

who is ur psu made by? cuz it does matter im running an ultra x connect 500w, and i highly recommend it, even though ull need to by a 24 pin cable from their site.

you might want to go with an nvidia graphics card since your motherboard supports dual graphics cards. they have to be the same card and only geforce 6600 gt's and up have the capability. its most likely worth it for a gaming computer.

you might want to go with dual channel ram since the mother board can support it.

if ur building this for gaming u should probly go with the western digital 74 gb raptor hard drive. it runs at 10,000rpm instead of 7,200rpm and still has an 8 mb cache.

overall though even if you keep it as is and get an amd 64 cpu ur gonna have a very nice gaming computer

Can you recommend some of the parts that you ahve talked about. I thought the ati X800XL was owning the 6600 atm???

I think i will change the hd then to a western digital.

What ram would be dual channel?

Is the 6600 gt a 256 mb? and is it the same price as a ATi?

I am ona budget of 700 pounds.

The Psu is from ebuyer.com doesn't have a make, is this not good enough as i don't want it failing.

he mentioned the nvidia card, because if the mobo your looking at has dual video slots, nvidia has a new thing going- you can connect 2 of the same kind of card (6600gt or better) together, and increase performance.
I havent talked to anyone using this, so I dont know how well it actually works.
I have the ATI X850XT, it is amazing. its performance is only a couple of percentage points better than the 800xt your looking at, so it would work great.
(I actually went to the store looking to buy the 800, but it was out of stock- the 850 was same price at the time, and it was in stock, so I got it. of course, prices have dropped a lot since I bought...)

I would recommend getting SATA hard drives, they are faster, use thinner cabling (to help improve airflow inside the case), and the way of the future.

look on the website for that mobo, see what RAM they support. things like kingston and corsair, etc. it is better to get two 512 sticks of DDR. the processor/mobo can support dual channel ram, which basically doubles the speed of the ram, maximizing your buss speed (the FSB). this equals increased performance system wide.

lol nvidia's SLI tech isnt cheap, especially if your on a fixed budget =p

i also havent spoken to anyone who has the guts to spend that much $ on 2 vcards and the SLI connector itself, but i can imagine the GPU speeds that are reached are insane.. just depends on how hardcore of a gamer you are i guess.

personally i am going to wait a bit since it is relatively new =)

i was just saying that u might want to try goin nvidia if u want to upgrade later, but radeon is just as good. if u found a card at a good price then go for it, especially on a limited budget. oh and yes you can get a 6600 gt in 256 mb, and if u had the money you could get a 6800 ultra in 512 mb, but its up near 900 bucks right now....so i would wait, lol.

when ur looking on sites for ram just look up dual channel ram and u'll find it.

you might not want to skimp on the psu cuz one of those can make or break a comp. the ultra x connect 500w psu is goin for 70 bucks with a $20 rebate so its only 50, you might want to go with that one.

lolz its cool, i was just confused, thought if a mobo supported it it came with the jumper. but the jumper is kinda a big deal...its required to make the entire thing work.

price wise it isnt a big deal

importance wise, lets just say without it you just have 2 very expensive vcards taking up 2 PCI slots and nothing is running in sync.

it basically connects the gpu's ya.. so its the heart and soul of the SLI technology lol.

i was just thinking you corrected me in saying the sli connectors come with the mobos and not separatley =)

Oh guys so as im from the UK i can't buy from newegg. I have to look for an alternative psu but as you say i don't want a cheap and nasty one, i am going to need a good quality one for my system as i don't want it failing on me!

I ahve decided to go with

AMD 3500+ 512 cach
Ati radeon 256 mb X800XL
kingston pc3200 1gb DDR400 dual
asus A8N sli


So i guess i need some advive on the psu and case?

As i say i can't order from newegg and prices over here are a little bit more expensive.

I will be buy the parts from www.ebuyer.com

If anyone has some advice please feel free to add it.

As i say i am looking for a good start point for a gaming PC. I will upgrade most probably within the next 6-12 months.

still recommend getting two 512 sticks of ram, in a dual channel kit. maximize your fsb speed!
also still recommend SATA hard drive, its not really any more expensive, and the performance increase is good. (if you want to go bleeding edge, that mobo supports the new SATA 2 standard. 3GB/second transfer rate! its out now, drives are available, and still no more expensive)

otherwise, that should be a great start, should last a while before any major upgrades are needed.
Samm, one of the techs on this site, is from england. check some of her posts, she lists good companies to buy from over there sometimes. she dwells mostly in the hardware forum.
