Hi guys. i'm trying to troubleshoot this error: PXE-E61: Media test failure.
I attempted to build my newest pc from a barebones system which came with the motherboard, cpu and case. After adding 256MB of pc 2700 and a dvd recorder and a modem i tried to boot up. I managed to get into the bios and set the date/time and set the hard disk type to auto.(like the manual said) but i havent installed the hard drive yet. Could this possibly be why i'm getting the error and if not what would you suggest i do next? I have a seagate 80GB hard drive that i just purchased.

Any suggestions on what i should do next?

what you may be looking at is one of these problems
Please only do the things I list one at a time.

1) checked the ide cables first On cd-rom, floppy drive, hard drive and also that the hard drive jumper is set as master (red edge of ide cable facing power and red edge on mother board is set to the power pin) ( if the green light on your floppy stays on that cable is not set right)

after checking all try to boot system.

2) remove the ide cable from your cd-rom and the power core and try to boot system (if it does boot most likely the cable is bad and you will need a new one)

after removed both cables (still unplug) try to boot system

3) if one of the frist two did not fix it then its a bois setting that not set right it may be tring to boot your system from a network.

Thanks for the info. i was able to correct the problem. One more thing if you dont mind. my xp2400 processor is being recognized as an 1800+. Any ideas on how i can correct this?

its one of two things its a bios or a jumper setting whats the make and model of your mother board and i can tell you what one it is and help you set the setting to the right one

how did you fix your frist problem???????

Actually it was a matter of one of the drive cable being connected the wrong way. By the way, this was my first attempt at building a pc and since i was on an extreme budget at the time i decided to purchase a barebones soyo system. It came with the SY-k7vm333 motherboard, Athlon xp 2400 bare cpu and the case. I know the MB is not the greatest or the latest but i figured when i got back on my feet i could always upgrade.

what you need to do is set the cpu front side bus clock speed jumper on your motherboard if you look at the book you got with your motherboard it will show you where this is.its jumper jp3 there are 3 setting you can make by this jumper when you buy the MB soyo sets this jumper at 100mz where there is a little thing the connects pin here to set your FBS. your 2400 is a 266mz front bus so you need to set this jumper at 133 it is always set at hafe of the chips FBS.
For your MB the jumper setting are:
pins 1&2 jumped 100mz(defalt)
NO pins jumped 133mz (what you need to set yours at)
pins 3&4 jumped 166mz

Make sure you save this jumper if you upgraded your chip later down the line you may need it to change the FBS.

Thanks again Tazz, as always your info was right on the money. I do however have one more question. After installing a modem I have been receiveing an error message upon start up.

"microsoft windows"

"The system has recoverd from a serious error"
"A log of this error has been created"

it then gives me the option to send error report to help improve microsoft windows. at which point i choose Don't send.

any ideas on what this means? it does'nt seem to be affecting system performance, at least not that ive noticed.

If it only come up one time don't worry about it. make sure that you have all the windows updates there was one if i remmber right to fix a problems with this error reporting. Make sure you have the drivers installed that come with the modem.
