My system was poofed by what I think is a) adware. b) Malware, c) hijacked way bad.
It is a long story, but bottom line, I cannot use any program shortcuts. All Exe icons in programs or otherwise, on desktop etc, when I click icons, they all launch Adaware ?
Norton antivius scan show no virus, but found adware which adaware could not find. I am not able to use "Run / msconfig or regedit. I have to backdoor into Add / remove programs. Initially, when I cliked on icons I recieved the following message: "Windows cannot open file" " radio button 2 options are indicated.
"you may go on line to look up file automatically" ( which redirects me to a Microsoft page, with links CDKNOW.COM which then takes me to Filext.com.
2nd option radio button, "You may search from a list the program to open file". Way Too inconveinient ! Norton live update will not work either. Symantec Internet Security will not work. I do not have Microsoft Security Pack 2 as I had conflict experience with the Symantec products firewall etc. Bogged down my system performance . Adware scans says no threat files adware are found ? Any software I try to download and execute will not run. The adware found by Norton was the infamous Nnez & NDNuninstall6_38.exe. I am a magor neophyte in the rehelm of spyware, adware, malware removal. I have removed viruses using Symantec removal tools, but that is childs play. I have unistalled the NDotNet New.net Domains3.88 from the Add Removal and searched and deleted the NDNuninstall6_38.exe from as per Norton Security response for removal of Adware.NDotNet, but there is no way I can do the regedit navigate to subkeys because 1) I cannot get in to regedit. 2) I don't even know what a subkey is, which Symantech security response wants me to find, "navigate to" and delete. I'll blow away my registry in error and that will be Game over for my files, as this malware has disabled my ability to safely evacuate back ups of Pics, tunes and other precious files. I am not afraid to follow orders in repairing my system, as long as I have a geek in my corner explaining where to go and what to do. Regarding all the diagnostic stuff you may need me to DL, such as Hijack this etc, as I explained earlier, this bug may not let me open and run it. I am amazed as I had Norton Internet Security, Norton Antivirus, and Lavasoft Adaware SE all guarding my system for these idiots. Only after unloading Adwatch feature for about 20 minutes and watching a few trailers for the new Star Wars did the bugs get in......... As the Fly said in the movie the fly "HELP ME , HELP ME, PLEASE HELP ME !"
TY

PS, I've been trying to Google my way out of this mess on my own, and I got a lot of good stuff out it, but I am still a toddler in tems of this stuff.

Can you please download and doubleclick:
http://www.kellys-ko...dits/exefix.reg
Confirm you want to merge it with the registry.

Try HijackThis then and post the log.
If it still doesn't work rename HijackThis.exe to HijackThis.com and doubleclick it.

Metallica,

Great Try, I think your on the right track, only when I downlaoded exefix.reg I get that same message box which says the following:
WINDOWS CANNOT OPEN THIS FILE:
exefix.reg
To open this file, windows needs to know what program created it. Windows can go on-line to automatically, or you can manually select from a list of programs on your computer.

What do you want to do ?
( Radio Button) Use the web service to find the appropriate program.
( Radio Button) Select the program from a list.

First option sends me to a Microsaft page and a link to CKNOW.COM which sends me to a site called Filext.

Second option opens a list of my programs or a browser window like Windows explorer, but the exe files are all in text and difficult for me to understand ?

Its like this malware / adware or vius is filtering incoming downloads and rendering them inert as they come in before I can use them to help nuke the problem issue. I even tried to rename the hijackthis to .com ext as you suggested, and when I clcked on it, got the same message above ? :tazz: Perhaps you have firends on your list of geekzilla super heros who have input of how I could beat this thing. I am despeate to evade reformating harddrive at all costs ;)

Thanx

I've got a big bag of tricks. Don't despair yet. :tazz:

Select the program from a list and show the way to regedit in your System folder

If that doesn't work or you can't find it, download and run:
http://home.earthlin...ly/EXEfix08.com

and see if that helps.

Let me know,

I spoke too Soon. This crap returned for a rematch. Most all symptoms the same. Seems to be messing around in the registry.... poofed my icons again, trouble executing programs. It attacks regisrty though my sons user screen in XP. I see if assault through adaware adwatch. 6000 plus attempts to change the registry, olny three attempst got through, as the active button was not checked in adwatch from the onset. I hit Block Traffic in Norton IS to try to stop, but the first three hit and now I'm back to square one ? :tazz: possible sending files to Recycle bin, I go there, try to restore , but i dunno.... ;) ;) Now I am getting some funky message Symantec Anit Virus won't start as a component is missing. I fired up hijak this and here' the log it gave me.

I actually did as you recommeded, and things appeared cool. And then I went into my son's user, as that, per adaware ad watch, was where the registry attacks occured, and the issue came right back. ;) So I retraced your steps.
Looks like I missed one file when I did the hijack the last time. I fixed that too.

I learned that my son's user had Administrator staus (?) I fixed that. Only I have that staus now. Here is my last HT Log

AdWatch is the one that has to go.

Uninstall it. You can install it later, but at this moment it is being a pest to you.

It is unloaded......is that good ?
I do not think I can unistall it without removing Adaware in the firstpalce.
Meanwhile, any other items I need to nuke from HJ Log ?

Question. I do not have MS Security Pack 2. I understood it to conflict with Symantec Norton Internet security, as in Firewall conflicts, whachu think, should I keep one or the other, or have you heard of poblems with that too?
I once installed SP2 at work and the systems all ran like snails ? ;) I was told of the conflicts by MS techie, I think ? ;)

Anyway, I will wait with HJT open for your recommendation and Adwatch is unloaded at this point !

Thanx

I had a problem with Windows not recognizing NAV as an Antivirus.
Which is easy to solve (or ignore)

If you are running a separate firewall (which is recommended) you can and should disable the Windows firewall the same as for SP1

The last time I checked AdWatch was listed separately under Add/Remove Software. So you should be able to uninstall it without touching AdAware.

Your Hijackthis log looks fine. I am very positive that this is just a case of AdWatch not allowing any registry changes. It takes these out even if they were done when AdWatch was off.

OK, so.....no adjustments to HJT log list.

Look in add remove to uninstall adwatch. Can I / Should I ever reinstall Adwatch ?

How about the following I learned at Lavasoft support page ?
" Removed unwanted files keep being restored after rebooting the computer. (Note: This is often due to System Restore in Windows)
You have items located in your system restore folder. No outside program can empty that, it must be done by you. Please follow the directions below to clear system restore:

Windows Me:
Close all open programs.
Right-click My Computer on the Windows desktop, and then click Properties.
Click the Performance tab.
Click File System.
Click the Troubleshooting tab.
Check Disable System Restore, click OK, and then click Close.
Click Yes to restart. This disables the System Restore feature and will purge the contents of the _RESTORE folder when the system is restarted.
After cleaning the infected files, repeat steps 1 through 7, except in step 6, [/b]uncheck[/b] Disable System Restore.

Windows XP:
Click Start, and then right-click My Computer.

Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Restart the computer.
Repeat steps 1 through 6, except in step 4, uncheck Turn Off System Restore.
Then after you do this, please create a new restore point:

Got to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore. On the next page that comes up you will have three choices, choose Create Restore Point. Then click next type in a description "after cleanup". Then choose "Create" then close.

" ????? ;)

And, how do I fix problem with Windows not recognizing NAV as an Antivirus.
Which is easy to solve (or ignore) ?

And do not install MS SP2 or 1 as long as i have Symantec IS and like it ?
