Hello.

I have a Dell XPS laptop running on Windows XP Professional.

I used to have a volume indicator bar pop up on my screen whenever I touched the volume up/down/mute buttons at the front of my laptop. I am still able to control my volume with these buttons, but it would be nice to be able to see the indicator level again.

Do you have the volume control icon in your taskbar tray at the bottom right? If not you may have to go into control panel, sounds-speech and audio devices, and put a checkmark in the box to show the sounds icon.

Yes I have the speaker icon available in the bottom right of my computer.

The feature that is missing is when I touch the easy access volume buttons at the front of my computer, a volume indicator bar used to pop up to show the adjustment level and then it disappears. It just helps to visually see the volume level.

Does this make sense?

It displays a large green progress type bar on the bottom of the screen when the buttons for volume are pushed to show increase or decrease in volume.

Yes, that is what I am looking for. My computer used to show it, but now it doesn't appear any more.

I'm not sure how to get it back. This has happened a couple of times with my wife's system as she has the keyboard. Eventually she reboots a couple of times and the problem resolves itself.
Give it a try, you can't lose anything.

This problem started about 2 weeks ago, so my computer has been turned on and off many times since then, and no progress yet. Thanks for the reply though.

Please Go to
1: STARTand the click on RUN
2: Type in devmgmt.msc
3: Click Enter

To do a screenshot please have click on your Print Screen on your keyboard. It is normally the key above your number pad between the F12 key and the Scroll Lock key
Now go to Start and then to All Programs
Scroll to Accessories and then click on Paint
In the Empty White Area click and hold the CTRL key and then click the V
Go to the File option at the top and click on Save as
Save as file type JPEG and save it to your Desktop

Sorry, my MSPaint will not open. Then it just asks if I want to send an error report. Hmmmm. Very strange. I remember using it a long time ago. Things on my computer are going weird lately.

I don't understand what you mean about exclamation marks or x's. I don't see any of that.

If there is a problem with a driver or a part of the motherboard there would be a yellow exclamtion mark or a red X to the left of that entry indicating a problem.

No, I don't see anything like that.

Then the problem is not the motherboard per say.
There may be a missing driver for the front panel or the display has been changed somehow. Has there been any software updates done either by you or by the OS itself just prior to this starting?

There was a malware virus on my computer, but that got cleaned up. So I guess one of those clean up tools did something to it.
