front audio ports not working

The front audio ports not working. When you plug a mic or headphones in the pc nothing happens. for example: i plug in headphones in the front audio port on my pc and the sound still comes out the port on the back of my pc. Ive got the audio wire into the right socket on the motherboard. Any suggestions?
