Computer so slow practically un-usable

My computer is sooo slowww it's barely usable. I've done everything i know to do; checked startup, deleted temp files, used MS CONFIG, but it's still slow. It's a DELL Dimension 4600 and running XP. I"m not having any other strange behaviour, but wondering if I might have a virus I"m unaware of. Can you help me troubleshoot?
