Gmail and Google Chrome?

When using Gmail I have two problems:
1, When going to a web site from gmail I loose all tool bars, this is for any web site that I visit, if I go to these same sites via a short cut all tool bars are visible
2, When clicking (X) close box at top of web page I am returned to my desk top and not gmail 'in box' as used to be the case.
I suspect that it is google chrome that is causing this, I have set IE as default but I think gmail uses chrome.
