laptop shuts down during startup

Lenovo 3000 N200 laptop.
It takes 3-4 tries of booting up before the laptop actually boots up. Once up, it seems to be working ok.
During those 3-4 times, it gets to the screen that says Windows XP (black screen) with that thing on the bottom that scrolls across as it is booting, I hear the fan come on & then it just shuts down - never actually getting past that screen.

Any ideas what this could be? I'm assuming it's not a software issue only because once it does load up windows everything seems to be ok - it even reboots without a problem.

I'm completely clueless as to where to start with this and would appreciate any help.
