Received the message "The file asms on windows xp professional service pack 3 cd is needed, cannot get out of upgrade and upgrade will not complete

Please help

Am installing upgrade from files on a mybook, have used them many times to perform upgrades with no problem. The machine us an etower 633is and was being upgraded from an earlier version of windows xp which had pretty much stopped working

I've been trying to follow instructions on microsoft for editing the registry to fix a problem with "asms" I get to a point where it says to delete the upper and lower filters, are these actual file names because i do not see them anywhere. If they are referring to some other files how do i know what they are.

You have the installation files on a external drive?
Is the XP a Genuine Microsoft Installation disk?
Did you format the drive using Fat or Fat32?

Take a look HERE at what Microsoft says about this issue and how to resolve it.

The files were originally downloaded to be burned as an iso file, I recently worked on a pc that would not load anything from it's dvd rom. I loaded the Iso into a program called poweriso, but instead of burning the image I simply dragged and dropped each file into a folder on my mybook. Afterwards I was able to run the setup from the mybook and it installed perfectly'

This machine had a similiar issue it was stuck in a loop, it would simply turn itself off and on, I finally got it to stay on and saw that it was running window xp w sp1, so i decided to try to upgade the machine. When I put the sp cd into the cd rom the machine started o loop again (stops when I remove the cd).

I then decided to run the installation from the mybook, it went well until I recieved the "asms" error. I follwed the microsoft instructions of hitting shift f10 to get to the command prompt and try to repair the registry but was not sure what they meant by upper and lower filters and was stumped.

I'm able to get to the cmd prompt and into the registry, but still cannot locate any files called upper or lower filters, cannot boot into safemode and cannot cancel the aborted installation

Are you in the registry and at the instructed area?

# When you receive the error message, press SHIFT+F10 to start a command session.
# Type regedit.exe, and then press ENTER.
# Click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
# On the File menu, click Load Hive, and then load %Windir%\System32\Config\System.sav.
# When you are prompted to specify a name, type Test.

So you can't boot into windows then?
If you have a failed installation then we probably need to rebuild the boot.ini file.

You are correct i can't boot into windows and it is a failed installation
This is where I stopped in the registry -# Delete the UPPERFILTERS and LOWERFILTERS registry keys.I know i sound like and idiot but I do not know which files would be the upper or lower filters so did not know what to delete.

how do I rebuild the boot.ini file

If the keys are not there then the step is not needed.
Since you cannot boot into windows is there data that needs to be saved?
I'm not saying it will be lost but i would rather you make sure it is safe first before we do the next required steps. Do you have a linux live cd to backup your files?

there are documents and photos but they can be lost if needed. i don't have a linux disk

Then do this first.

Get Puppy Linux from my signature below...Get puppy-2.16-seamonkey-fulldrivers.iso download it and burn it to cd
..
if you don't have a burning program that will burn .ISO files get Burncdcc from my signature...it is a small FAST no frills iso burning program...

NOTE...do not put a blank cd in until burncdcc opens the tray for you
1. Start BurnCDCC
2. Browse to the ISO file you want to burn on cd/dvd ....in this case its puppy-2.16-seamonkey-fulldrivers.iso
3. Select the ISO file
4. click on Start

make sure in the bios the cd drive is the first boot device....

put the cd in the cd drive..boot your computer....puppy will boot and run totally in ram...if your hardware is is good working order you will know...
after you get it running and your at the desktop...you take the puppy linux cd out and then you can use the burner to copy all your data to cd/dvds
you can also use it to backup your data to a external usb harddrive..just have it hooked to the computer when you boot up with puppy...

quick guide for saving data...music..files on a system that will not boot using puppy Linux..


after you get to puppy desktop..
click on the drives icon...looks like a flash drive...top row..it will list all the drives connected to

your computer...

click on the red icon for the drive you want to mount...in this case its a flash drive ...puppy will

mount the drive..the drive icon turns green when its mounted...
minimize the drives mounter window..you will need it again in a few minutes..
drag the right edge of it sideways to shrink it to its narrowest size...about half the width of the screen...then drag the window to the right edge of the screen...

now click on the icon that looks like a filing cabinet (kind of yellow) on the main drive...it should
already be green..
you will see a list of all the folders on the main drive Usually your C: drive..shrink that window to
the narrowest you can..about half the width of the screen...drag that window to the left side of the screen...
at this point you should have 2 windows open on your desktop..the flash drive on the right side..
go back to the folders on the C: drive...click on the documents and settings folder...then your user
name or all users..find the folders that has your data..
drag and drop the folder with the data you want to make copies of to the flash drive window...

your options are to move ..copy ect...JUST COPY..if its to big you will have to open the folder and
drag and drop individual files until the flash drive is full...(I have a 120 GB external USB drive for
big data recovery jobs and a 4 GB flash drive for the smaller jobs)..after you get the files copied to
the flash drive...
Click on the drives mounter you minimized earlier
UNMOUNT THE FLASH DRIVE by clicking on the green icon..you will once in awhile get error messages when
unmouting the drive..ignore them..when the flash drive icon turns red again its safe to remove the
flash drive..trot on over (stroll if you want to look cool) to another computer and plug in the flash

drive and copy all the data files ( I drag and drop) to the other computer..
make sure the other computer can read them...

now delete the data on the flash drive...take it back to the misbehaving computer and plug it in

again..click on the drives icon again and repeat until you have all your data transferred to the working
system..

Do you have a actual Genuine Microsoft XP installation cd?
If not then let's try to rebuild the boot.ini file by doing the following.

If you have your Windows XP disk

• Insert your Windows XP disk into your computer and reboot
• Make sure the PC is set to run from the CD as the primary boot device.
  NOTE: You do this by setting your PC to boot to the CD-ROM in BIOS (enter bios by pressing f1, f2 or del key during memory count up, then search for boot order, and set the CD as the first boot device)
• When the PC boots, it will boot from the CD...after the first several screens load, you will be given a choice to choose R for Recovery Console. You will be asked to log in.
  NOTE: For Windows XP Home, there is not password, just hit ENTER. For Windows XP pro, ask whomever set up the machine what password they used.

When you see the Recovery console C:\WINDOWS prompt continue to section 3 (Running "ChkDsk")

If you DO NOT have your Windows XP disk

• Download RC.ISO from Here.
• Now burn this ISO image to a CD and boot your computer with it.
  NOTE: Keep in mind that this is different than burning a file to a CD-ROM. If you do not know how to burn an ISO image, then download CDBurnerXP Pro to another Windows machine and install it. Then go Here for instructions for burning the ISO image
• Once the CD is created, place it in the defunct computer
• Then reboot your broken PC with that CD in the CD-ROM drive.
• Make sure the PC is set to run from the CD as the primary boot device.
  NOTE: You do this by setting your PC to boot to the CD-ROM in BIOS (enter bios by pressing f1, f2 or del key during memory count up, then search for boot order, and set the CD as the first boot device)
• When the PC boots, it will boot from the CD...after the first several screens load, you will be given a choice to choose R for Recovery Console. You will be asked to log in.
  NOTE: For Windows XP Home, there is not password, just hit ENTER. For Windows XP pro, ask whomever set up the machine what password they used.

Running "ChkDsk"

• At the Recovery console C:\WINDOWS prompt, type
  

  chkdsk /r

• Press ENTER
• Let this scan run UNINTERUPTED until completed (30 min or so depending on the drive)
• Report any errors in your next reply
• Once the scan is complete, Type exit, and then press ENTER to quit Recovery Console.
• Your computer will now restart, boot from the CD again and continue with the next steps.

Using "BootCfg /Rebuild" to fix the "Boot.ini" file

• At the Recovery console C:\WINDOWS prompt, type
  

  bootcfg /rebuild

• Press ENTER
  Note: The bootcfg /rebuild command scans the hard disks of the computer for Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP installations, and then displays the results. You can add the detected Windows installations.
• When you receive a message that is similar to the following message, press Y:
  

  
  Total Identified Windows Installs: 1
  
  [1] C:\Windows
  Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All)
  

  NOTE: You may see more than one entry here if you have a dual boot windows system. If this is the case follow this procedure for ALL installations to make sure that all OS's are added correctly
• You receive a message that is similar to the following message:
  

  Enter Load Identifier

  NOTE: This is the name of the operating system. This is either Microsoft Windows XP Professional or Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition.
• Type the name of your operating system, and then press ENTER
• You receive a message that is similar to the following:
  

  Enter OS Load options

• Type /fastdetect, and then press ENTER.
• Type exit, and then press ENTER to quit Recovery Console.
• Your computer will restart, and the updated boot list may appear when you receive the "Please select the operating system to start" message.
• If you see a Boot list with multiple entries choose the XP Home option to boot to windows.

machine gets to 52% (using the RC disk) and crashes with the following "windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\windows\system32\config\system

you can attempt to repair this file by starting window setup using the original setup cd-rom

Did you change the boot sequence in the bios so that the cdrom is the first boot device?
Pressed F10 to save and exit then Y to verify
