Hi ofst, welcome to Geeks to Go! <_<

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.
O2 - BHO: mwsBar BHO - {07B18EA1-A523-4961-B6BB-170DE4475CCA} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\MYWEBSEARCH\BAR\1.BIN\MWSBAR.DLL

http://us.dl1.yimg.c...ropper1_3us.cab

Reboot in safe mode (by tapping F8 at startup and select safe mode from the menu).
Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):
C:\PROGRAM FILES\MYWEBSEARCH

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log, and let us know how your system's working. :D

Thanks so much for the help!!!!!

I have deleted as instructed including all websearch files though I am not sure if the directory was in bold.

I still have some websearch files in my icq directory. Should I delete them as well?

And finally, can you please explain what is this websearch and how i may have got it?

I have not yet used enough the computer to tell you if the problem went away but I will come back shortly to report.

In the mean time below please find the new HijackThis report.

Thanks. You are amazing.

How do you prevent spyware from being installed again? We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use).

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.
Link to SpywareBlaster: http://www.geekstogo...tion=show&id=12

It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
1. Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend Firefox.
2. Install Sun's Java. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine .

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder if everything is working okay.

After doing all these, your system will be thoroughly protected from future threats. <_<

Do I need to reinstall Win 98?

Just depends how much data you have to backup, and how much time you're willing to spend.

After a little more research it seems this error is related to your USB driver. I would look for updated drivers for your motherboard.

I would really prefer to not reinstall Win 98 again. I have done a few more things. I have reinstalled the MyWebSearch since I saw that it was not completely removed from the PC. I saw it in the add/delet software in the control panel). Using Error Nuker by doing a proper uninstall I have reduced the ActiveX problems by 13 (now I still have 23).

Another reason for the problem might have been WinFax which I have uninstalled recently. I thing I said yes to delete all shared files. I have loaded it again to see if that will remedy the situation ( I will uninstall it but this time will leave the shared files).

You may be correct regarding the USB. I had some problems and was asked to reinstall it recently which I did. I am also using a mini 4 port USB hub (made by iConcepts).

And finally, When the problem occurs I can't use the Express Launch, the office tool bar etc. I also lose the maine screen and get the message to fix the active desktop (I am not sure that I am using the correct termination but I get that white screen with an option to fix thew desktop to its original state. That does not fix the internet connection. I need to reboot to be able to work again.

Sorry for the long message.

Maybe now the machine is OK. I will probably know later.

Thanks again!

Just to be safe here is the most recent

Yes, It is always the same message.

I got a scare yesterday when I uninstalled WinFax. I couldn't restart Windows. Only through Safe Mode. But after two tries I was able to.

I disabled the miniport and for a while I thought it was the source but this morning the problem returned with the same above message.

I still wonder if WinFax is not to be blames for this problem that I am having.

Also I wonder if the active desk thing (the white screen desktop message. It usually comes with a amessage that Explorer caused an error or something like that. Next time I will write it down) and the above blue message are related or separate problems.

One thing for sure. BIG THANK YOU.

Thanks again!

Since I removed the mini port the problem did not occur again.

I am thinking about not using the mini port any more unless you think that there is no harm in downloading Microsoft's fix.

Thanks again. You are the best!

I don't see any harm in downloading the fix and trying it again. There have mutiple fixes for this particular file in Windows 98, this is the newest version I could find.
