Formatted the partition that held Windows 7, and was still getting the dual boot screen when I turned on the pc. I did a system restore but it didn’t help, was told (not here) to downloaded EasyBcd v. 1.7.2 to get rid of that problem… didn’t quite work, now when I boot up I have the option to choose Older Windows Installation (no other choices) after choosing that, I get the option to choose XP Pro or recovery. Is there a way to get rid of that first ‘screen’?

Before using EasyBcd I thought I’d just re-install Windows 7, only to find I can no longer boot from my DVD drive. Set up the boot order in BIOS, but still doesn’t boot the Win 7 DVD, the drive does seem to be looking for media when booting. I don’t have any other bootable DVDs, but and I can still play (movie) DVDs on it.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Os the Win7 cd original, burned or download?
When you set boot sequence did you click F10 to save the settings and were you prompted to click Y to Verify?

Please do the following in the exact steps. Failure to do so could make the boot.ini damaged and cause unstable or unusable results with your system.:

Save a Backup Copy of Boot.ini

1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl and then click OK.
2. Click on the Advanced tab, and then click Settings
3. In the Startup and Recovery area at the bottom click Settings.
4. Under System Startup click Edit. This opens the Boot.ini file in Notepad ready for editing.
5. In Notepad, click File on the Menu bar, and then click Save As.
6. First in here change the location in the top white drop down box to Desktop. Then in the file name change to Boot.old and save as Text Document(*.txt) and save it to your Desktop and then click Save



Please copy and paste all the lines from your Boot.ini file in your next reply.


Now you can repeat the steps to get back to step Number 4
I will reply with the Fix to do. Once the fix has been applied then Save and Close the file.
Reboot and let me know if this takes care of your problem

The Win7 CD is burned, I was told it was the beta that MS allowed to be downloaded.
When re-booted I checked and it has the DVD as drive to boot from first. (then CD, then HD)

This line needs to be deleted.
c:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /CMDCONS

Now make sure you have the original boot,ini backed up before making any changes.
Then follow the last 3 lines in post #2 and let me know what happens.

Is my pc not booting from DVD because it's a burned DVD? I don't want to install win7, but would like to know if this is a problem with the DVD drive...?

Burn cd's rarely work.
Where did the Win7 come from?

Are you sure that the DVD is actually a bootable DVD?

Have you tried other "known" bootable DVD's or even CD's in the drive?

I put my (original) XP disc in both drives and it doesn't boot! Boot order is DVD, CD, then HD...

Sounds like the drive itself is having issues.
Do you have or can you borrow a known working drive and try it in the system?

No, can't get my hands on another drive... I can play movies from the DVD drive, and write to CDs, no problems, just can't boot from them!

From bios (was checking AGAIN to make sure of the boot order), instead of just booting into XP, I was taken to "Windows Boot Manager" with chices to boot XP or run Windows memory diagnostic tool.

Is the original XP disk a full version or a upgrade?

I'm lost then as if it is a Genuine Original Full Version Microsoft XP installation disk it should boot.
Have you tried it in another system to make sure it works?
